5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite of all the Les Miserables!, Oct 25 2002

Of all the CD's I have listened to, I have found this version of the musical to be my favorite. Every singer has a different voice quality that empahiszes their character's personality. Fantine's voice is soft and motherly while Cosette's voice is young and beautiful while Eponine's voice is emotional and strong as she belts "On My Own." For the "highlights" CD, a think the International version is the best!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Highlights Album!, Mar 11 2003
Ce commentaire est de: Symphonic Highlights (Audio CD)
I think the cast on this album is great. I loved Gary Morris as Valjean. Colm Wilkinson's singing, from what I've heard, is not as smooth as Gary Morris's, and I feel like his high notes are far more forced. The choppy quality of Wilkinson's singing also really gets to me.

I had no problems with the Fantine on this album, and although everyone seems to be complaining about Kaho Shimada's Japanese accent, I couldn't hear it. She sounded really clear and a little too girlish for my taste, but hey. Eponine's a young character. As others have commented, Javert and Marius were great. I also really enjoyed the singing of Anthony Warlow as Enjolras.

Additionally, I thought the selection of songs was really great. I'm not sure why people seem to want the album to project the full story of Les Mis. People who haven't seen the musical or read the book ought not to expect the full story out of a Highlights album. That kind of expectation is really too much to ask out of a short album which has been cut down from 4 hours long.

I'd recommend this to people who liked some of the Les Mis songs but don't want to buy 4 hours' worth of music to get a couple of songs. I think this is also a great choice for people who have read the book or who otherwise know the story, and would like to get a taste of how the musical treats the story of The Miserable.

2.0 out of 5 stars Could Have Been SOOOO Much Better!, Mar 1 2003
By A Customer
Ce commentaire est de: Symphonic Highlights (Audio CD)
This is one of the worst versions of Les Mis that I have heard. Whoever chose these people as the "all stars" was sorely mistaken. They could have done MUCH better in most areas. How can someone make a all star recoding w/o Colm Wilkinson? Gary Morrison is not bad, but seriously. Wilkinson IS Valjean. No other person could do that part justice. I did like Philip Quast as Javert. That was one of the only characters I didn't think they could do better with. He was great. Debbie Byrne was so-so as Fantine, not as good as Ruthie Henshall, but not awful. Micheal Ball was decent as Marius, but I liked David Bryant from the original Broadway cast better. Anthony Warlow was fine as Enjorlas, but personally I believe Micheal Maguire has one of the best voices I've ever heard. Kaho Shimada was better than Francis Ruffle as Eponnine, but she's no Lea Solonga. However, Tracy Shayne should NEVER have made it. I could have been a better Cosette. Seriously, she was squeeky and whiny, and made Cosette a generally wimpy and shallow character. I am glad "In My Life" was cut simply so I didn't have to listen to her. Awful. The Thernardiers were fine, but didn't bring as much energy to the roles as others have. The main reason I disliked this version is the cuts (as well as Tracy Shayne). What were the producers thinking when they cut "A Little Fall of Rain", "In My Life" and "Castle on A Cloud"??? These are some of the best songs! With this version you can't even understand what the plot is, and you never know some major characters exist, like Gavroche and Young Cosette. They really made some mistakes on this CD, and these mistakes were simply unforgivable.
