I have never been a big fan of Lloyd Webber's shows, finding that sometimes the syrupy vocalists get in the way of the music; so this album is right up my street. Here we have just the music, played by a standard symphony orchestra, in this case superbly well by the in-form LSO, without the distraction of soloists attempting to hit the notes. The arrangement of Phantom Fantasia is brilliant, as are most of the others, and I read somewhere that this track was nominated for a Grammy. I don't know whether it won, but it would not surprise me.
What amazes me is that I have never heard of a public performance of this work and I don't know why. In this day and age when every form of public entertainment is searching for new ways of pulling in audiences, I would have thought this is one sure-fire winner. Meanwhile, until then I have my prized copy to listen to whenever I want!

Lloyd Webber without the singing April 30 2003

A Very Pleasent Listening Experience! Jan. 7 2011
By Matthew Helm - Published on Amazon.com

"Symphonic Lloyd Webber" is actually a very enjoyable piece of work that I just happened to stumble upon. Though I am not a "phanatic" per se, I love listening to most of Andrew Lloyd Webber's compositions with "The Phantom of the Opera" being one of my favorites. This CD contains instrumental versions of several of Lloyd Webber's hits, including Phantom, Cats, Starlight Express, and Jesus Christ Superstar. All arranged by Conductor Anthony Inglis and played by the London Symphony Orchestra, recorded in 1993. Inglis puts his own unique spin on the classical Lloyd Webber standards that I found fun and relaxing to listen to. My wife and I have used it for background at dinner parties and while we clean the house. I highly suggest purchasing, especially for those die hard "phans" who want to hear the beautiful musical score without the lyrics!

Lloyd Webber instrumentally straight up... May 9 2011
By vmzfla - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
The LSO under the direction of British conductor Anthony Inglis gives us a symphonic tour de force of Andrew Lloyd Webbers most popular theatrical scores. Inglis takes the more serious less gimmicky approach, conducting arrangements more in the vain of 20th Century Romanticism.(akin to Richard Strauss) There is little exaggerated if any electronic instruments involved adding to the pure instrumental experience. Phantom and JC Superstar are the headliners, everything else I would consider just filler, though a short suite from "Cats" is nicely fleshed out considering it's a one hit(Memory)wonder. All and all this effort is a pleasant listen lead by a conductor who is just as at home directing Mozart as he is in the theatre orchestra pit.

Amazing Orchestral Work!!! Phantom music without singing! Dec 2 2005
By Phantom Phan - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
I had been looking for a CD of just the music of the Phantom and this is exactly that. Just the music, no singing. It was done by the London Symphony Orchestra so it was superb! It sounds just like the 2004 movie version without the singing. Get both CD's, movie version and this without the singing. Really worth it if you love Phantom! I've also bought a few other "just the music, no singing versions" of the Phantom but this rates way above the rest.

I completely agree with the other review that this definitely needs to be performed live, I think so many people would love to go see it. You won't be disappointed with this CD.
