Shimmering and Sublime,
By
This review is from: Syms 35-41 (Audio CD)
These LPs blew me away when I first bought them and the re-mastered CDs have done so all over again. Boehm sets the standard for an approach to Mozart which embodies all the principles of the perfections of Neoclassical art. There is elegance, humour and intensity of feeling, presented with a kind of reserve and reverence which other recordings do not possess. They are perfect gems and the 34th is particularly fine, as is the 41rst which almost moved me to tears.I have the privilege of enjoying Boehm"s during many live concerts and opera performances. His clarity and precision were legendary, but they somehow never got in the way of spontaneity. He displayed at times almost heartbreaking pathos and sparkling wit without out ever crossing the line of taste. In short, his interpretations are aristocratic and while not everyone may like that approach, it makes for Mozart performances which are non pareil. It is amazing how well the sound has been re-mastered which showcases the clarity and individuality of this wonderful orchestra. BUY this set if you have never bought Mozart before. BUY this if you have all the other interpreations available. BUY this even if you have pre-conceived negative ideas about Boehm.s approach. Listen intellectually and emotionally and you will be moved beyond belief by the beauty.

40 Years On Still Among The Best,
By NNNNN "xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx" (xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) - See all my reviews

You might call Karl Bohm's Mozart old fashioned but don't take that as a put down. He does not take up the more recent practice of taking every repeat causing some works to go over 40 minutes. Not for Bohm the fine points of the latest academic trend but instead a a very fine feel for the spirit of Mozart's music. If the dramatic grand gesture is needed then Bohm magnificently provides it. If the music is livelier and more fleet of foot then Bohm sparkles with a wry grin. Overall this is Mozart to enjoy and Bohm never fails the listener. The 40 year old recording needs no excuses and neither do you for not buying these truly wonderful performances.

Simply the best,

As Karajan, Abbado, and Kleiber are for Beethoven, Bohm and Bernstein (along with Walter and Szell) are for Mozart. This double-decker comprised of the final six symphonies by Mozart (Symphony No. 37 was lost unfortunately and the original score remains undiscovered) is a MUST-HAVE for a Mozart fan. Bohm truly gives Mozart at its highest. Forget hesitating or regarding the price you should buy it simple as "1-2-3" and play music.
