Art House Gone Wild!,

This review is from: NEW Synecdoche New York (DVD) (DVD)
I must first say that I was a big fan of director/writer Charlie Kaufman's earlier films (Being John Malkovich, Adaptation, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind)but this exercise in the limits of viewer's patience is where he jumps the shark. All his other films were very unconventional and pushed the limits of high art in the cinematic medium, but there was a linear plot that you could relate to on some level. This mind-numbing offering is an insult to those of us who enjoy those independent, smart, quirky films that turn into cult classics. A film still has to have some focus and direction to keep you interested. This film try's too hard to be deep and clever but never follows through with that a-ha moment. For a filmmaker, 3 out of 4 is a pretty good track record. But save yourself the disappointment and rent one of his earlier gems.

Art House Gem Is Sure To Bore Mainstream Audiences,

This review is from: Synecdoche New York (DVD)
There's no denying that Charlie Kaufman is a talented and creative filmmaker. His work, however, can be an acquired taste, and more often than not, is a bit hit-or-miss. Synecdoche New York is fairly representative of much of his other work, although this story tends to be a bit more bleak than something like "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" SNY is infused with quirky mixture of dark fantasy and absurdism that juxtaposes itself against the stifling reality of its main character, Caden Cotard.Synecdoche, New York is the kind of film that becomes a darling of film societies and festivals. If you love movies that are character driven, and short on plot, it won't disappoint. Kaufman loves to push the boundaries of style and form. However, for mainstream movie fans, this will be a real yawner.

best of the year?,
This review is from: Synecdoche New York (DVD)
Could be the best movie of 2008. If you don't like to use your brain when you watch movies, avoid it. If you are interesting in watching a thoughtful, provoking film, you have no excuse not to see this.
