Product Description

Review

"a furious but meticulous, well-grounded, and powerful analysis"--Daniel Pipes, Middle East Quarterly

"Marius Deeb has written an authoritative, knowing book on the ways of dictatorship in Syria. It offers an unflinching analysis of the Syrian regime of Hafez Assad. Subtle, and superbly researched, it is the work of a historian who knows his way around the politics of the Arab world. A first-rate book." -- Fouad Ajami, Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies

"This is a major contribution to the study of inter-Arab politics and, more generally, of contemporary Middle East politics. Professor Deeb presents a meticulously researched and argued assessment of Syria's policies in Lebanon, a subject on which he is a leading authority. The book's point of view will arouse considerable debate and controversy, thereby increasing its visibility and circulation. Years from now, this book will be cited as a landmark contribution in the field." --Naomi Weinberger, Ph.D., Director, UN Studies Program, School of International and Public Affairs, Columbia University

Product Description

This study demonstrates that Syria's role in the Middle East has been, since 1974, an unabated terrorist war against all attempts to resolve peacefully the Arab-Israeli conflict. Marius Deeb provides evidence that Syria's role in Lebanon, since 1975, has been to perpetuate the conflict among the various Lebanese communities in order to keep its domination of Lebanon

First Sentence
It is remarkable how little is known about the nature of Asad's regime and even those who have delved into its nature failed to make the links between its domestic narrow base and its foreign policy. Read the first page

5.0 out of 5 stars The very truth, Sep 21 2005
By GTN-ohio "gtn-ohio" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Syria's Terrorist War on Lebanon and the Peace Process (Hardcover)
It is a controversial book where some might not agree at all with the author, but from a person who was there during the war a lot of what the author wrote is very accurate and the Lebanese people from all religions suffered from the Syrian dictator Hafez El-asad and his control over lebanon for three decades...luckily things are changing now for Lebanon and I hope all the region becomes really democratic including Syria...

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Insightful, Jun 5 2011

This review is from: Syria's Terrorist War on Lebanon and the Peace Process (Paperback)
Very insightful book... It speaks nothing but the truth and shows the multi-dimensional behavior of the Asad regime throughout the years of the Lebanese war.
The author dissects the events of the war in a fine-grained manner, showing Asad's relentless, genius and terrorist decision making and actions all throughout.

Evidently, the interpretations made by the author stand strong after eight years since it's writing. The future of the peace-process, the war with Israel, and the relationship with Hizbollah can be easily predicted after reading this book.

Highly recommended to anyone wishing to understand the reality of the Asad regime's system of thought.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tells it how it is., Aug 13 2005
By Avid Reader - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Syria's Terrorist War on Lebanon and the Peace Process (Paperback)
The first five words of the title say it all.

The author gives a good picture of Syria's policies and regime, and their impact upon the long term occupation of it's smaller neighbor, Lebanon.
