This is an incredible cd, by far one of the most innovative and interesting cd's I have ever heard. System combine metal, punk, jazz, folk music and a lot more to make one hell of a listeining experience. One second your being crooned by lead singer Serj while the instruments provide and equally soft background, the next your being pummeled by crushing rhythms and a guitar sound that is without a doubt one of the heaviest in modern music today. The depth on this record is something you almost never see in music, most evident on the song "Sugar". I found myself laughing at the chorus, with the high pitched background vocals and the jazzy beat, and then it ended so devastatingly brutal it shut me right up! "Spiders", though it sounds very similar to Tool, is another track that showcases the depth of the music. It is almost a ballad, but in a way that only System could do it. I can't really pick a favorite, because no two sound similar, and they are all amazing. In a music world filled with Korn clones and horrible boy bands, its nice to know that we have System of a Down, a band we can always rely on, and what a band they are.

I'm a SOAD fan,i have to say, each of their albums i have are great. Its hard to find bands that are bold enough to be different in the music world.I'm not that type of person who can accept any type of music easily,i'm the type that expects the music to capture, not only my ears but also my heart.I believe that the heart brings out many feelings. When i first listened to this album,it did not capture my attention that much, but soon, as i slowly listened to each and every of their songs, something grew in me,it was a mix of craziness, anger, creepiness and i don't know what else.i don't mean to exaggerate but these miscellaneous feelings exploded till it popped out of my mind,"GENIUS!".From SUITE PEE to PLUCK,each and every song was different and beautiful, the lyrics in some songs may sometimes be repetitive, but who cares, just enjoy the freakin music!Songs regarding issues on religion, war, drugs, politics and other issues that i believe are important for us to listen and understand. The lyrics in most of the songs makes you think.Usually, most of the time, when i listen to bands like KoRn,Mudvayne,Deftones,Slipknot or any other metal or hard rock bands, their music makes me 'feel' than think, what do i mean by 'feel',i'm trying to say that their music brings out a lot of feelings out of me.But when i listen to SOAD,its a different story, their music makes me feel and at the same time think.FAV songs:all except for cubert(this song is just okay to me.) WARNING! SYSTEM OF A DOWN MAY BE ADDICTIVE!

Standing above their peers,

In the general realm of rock music, I think System of a Down's 1998 eponymous debut would stand in the realm of 4-4.5 stars. However, in the realm of nu-metal, where they are often unfortunately placed, this release is not only light years ahead of any other debut (with the possible exception of Rage Against the Machine - also sometimes lumped in with their neandertal nu-metal peers), but way ahead of anything else released at the time. With swarms of mediocre bands polluting the airwaves in the late 1990's, it was refreshing to see a new and interesting take on a genre that was old hat almost immediately out of the gates. Shunning the aimless anger of Korn and Limp Bizkit, System of a Down focused their lyrics and, more importantly, singer Serj Tankian's unique vocals toward more lofty goals: the education of the American population to the wrongs not just in America and whoever RATM was interested in that week, but to the sufferings of their own people, the Armenians. That's not to say that the album has a heavy-handed political agenda, though. Yes, the lyrics are politically motivated, but in the era of fluff like Limp Bizkit's "Rollin'," it's more than welcome. The opening riffs of "Suite-Pee" hit hard and the band rarely lets up, except for the introspective hit single "Spiders." For profane, unrelentingly angry nu-metal, you could turn anywhere and find what you're looking for. But if you want to channel that anger and energy for something better than personal vengeance, System of a Down is the band for you.
