The first-person-shooter genre has grown by intermittent leaps since the days of Wolfenstein 3D. Since then, games like Doom, Quake, Half-Life, and Unreal Tournament, among others, have added several technical enhancements to the visceral thrill of playing a video game through a gun-toting character's eyes. Huge advances in 3-D graphics, sound, and processor speed, as well as the addition of network multiplayer gameplay, have favored the genre, and now Red Faction's Geo Mod technology promises to take the first-person shooter to new heights.

Geo Mod, short for geometry modification, allows formerly permanent elements of a game's background to change in real time. For example, if a player were to shoot a rocket at a stone wall, the wall could crumble or have a hole blown clean through. The best that previous games could do is change the texture of the wall and leave it looking charred.

While most gamers would applaud any advance in realistic graphics, Geo Mod also looks to influence the way first-person shooters are played. If the world of the first-person shooter can be altered, the game makers point out, then the world itself becomes a weapon at your disposal. More than just shooting opponents through walls, players should be able to cause a ceiling to collapse on an opponent. With the right tools, players will be able to destroy bunkers, block escape routes, and otherwise flush players out of their well-defended positions.

Obviously, it's Geo Mod that has gamers so excited, so other game components might be easy to overlook in the excitement. Red Faction's story is set on a Martian mining colony, where workers, buffeted by abusive guards and a deadly plague, revolt. In the single-player game, you'll commandeer fully armed land, sea, and air vehicles--not to mention up to 15 devastating weapons--to make your way through the game's 20 levels. The PlayStation2 version also features two-player split-screen deathmatch and Geo Mod-specific modes. --Porter B. Hall

Product Description

In Red Faction, players find themselves in the middle of a rebellion on the hostile surface of Mars fighting for their freedom against the evil Ultor Corporation. Featuring a sophisticated physics engine, five fully controllable vehicles, a variety of unique natural environments, and Volition's proprietary Geo-Mod Technology, Red Faction is one of the most advanced second-generation titles ever released for the PlayStation 2. Geo-Mod technology supports the real time, arbitrary modification of the geometry that makes up the game's environment. This means that players have the full ability to destroy whatever they want. Just point a weapon at an object or structure and shoot -- total destruction always follows.

5.0 out of 5 stars Red Faction Jan 18 2004
I recently bought Red Faction for the Playstation 2 game console.
RF is definitely one of the best first person shooters I have ever played. You get a huge array of different weapons to shoot the crap out Ultor's gaurds. Movement is easy and simple, however, short and narrow bridges and catwalks will sorely test your paitence. RF's storyline is "exciting". Hey, you're a miner on Mars about to rebel against a major mining facility. The abiity to alter your environment is a sure plus, blasting your way through walls or a group of gaurds can be entertaining. The game constantly progresses throughout the entire story, I think that gives it a sense of realism and makes you feel as though you're not stuck at a level-choose menu. Frequent loads between parts of your mission can be annoying, but its worth it. The graphics are excellent. Real life movement and gun sway are done properly. The best graphical feature in this game is the weapon-reload animation... for once they look real (which is why i didnt like Goldeneye for N64). Red Faction reminds me of Unreal Tournament, Especially in multiplayer against bots. Fast moving, large amounts of munitions and weapons, bloodshed and destruction all around you. The gameplay in both multiplayer and single player is increibly fast.

If you're known to "camp" during games... dont try it here! Campers will almost always find themselves gunned down in their little burrows. The single player missions are lengthy. You start out unarmed and literaly helpless. But within seconds, you've got a riot control baton... soon thereafter a pistol and so on.

RED FACTION WEAPON LIST:

Riot Shield -Protects against batons and pistol rounds
Riot Baton - Used as a taser, or hand-to-hand combat
12mm Pistol - Optional silencer, very accurate.
Submachine Gun - Toggle between 12mm and 5.56mm rounds.
Auto Shotgun - Buckshot or automatic fire.
Assult Rifle - Bursts or full automatic fire.
Flamethrower - Flame or toss canister for fire bomb.
Rocket Launcher - Normal, or "dumb" rockets.
Heavy Machine Gun - Inaccurate fast rate fire, or slow accurate fire.
Fusion Rocket Launcher- 1 round, massive explosion
Remote Charges - Explosive Device
Precision Rifle (my fav) - Scope, or Extremely accurate semi auto
Sniper Rifle - Scope, or manual aim, 6 round clip.
Grenades - BOOM
Rail Driver - 1 shot kill, infared scope (shoot through walls)

5.0 out of 5 stars best deal Dec 27 2003
This is the best $20 game you can buy. Being able to destroy almost everything rocks. It has great graphics for its time and the music is awsome. The level design is really awsome. Multiplayer is really fun, but it is kinda chunky and not smooth. The stealth levels are too hard and the AI is too smart. If you pull a gun out in the stealth levels. All the gaurd come running at you. The underwater vehicals are hard to control. Dispite its problems, it is still the best game for $20.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great game, to many loading times Oct 27 2003
This is a great game well worth $20 you will have plenty of fun playing this. The only thing to complain about in the frequent loading times that disrupt the flow of the game. But with that aside you wont be disapointed. I recomend this game.
