4.0 out of 5 stars Well written book in plain English., Jan 16 2010

This review is from: The TCP/IP Guide: A Comprehensive, Illustrated Internet Protocols Reference (Hardcover)
This book explains very well everything the average network administrator needs to know about building and maintaining a network. It's all written in an easy-to-read format, which explains not only how to do it, but why do it this way.

I really like the IPv6 section, which is really helpful for me at this time.

3.0 out of 5 stars Very complete and clear book but a bad reading experience, Sep 16 2009

This review is from: The TCP/IP Guide: A Comprehensive, Illustrated Internet Protocols Reference (Hardcover)
This book covers pretty much everything but could have had all the information in pretty much half the paperweight...

I read it from cover to cover so I didn't feel the pinch that much but if you're going to read specific chapters, be aware that there are a lot of references to other chapters which might end up forcing you to read much more than you expected or have the time to.

I would have given 4 or 5 stars to such a complete reference book but there's way to much useless talk between two bits of info. For example, pretty much every section begins with one (maybe even two) chapters explaining how important en useful it would be to read the next chapters... And the "technical" chapters usually contain quite a bit of not so useful decoration.

If you're looking to learn about TCP/IP, you might as well consider getting a good book about networking which usually includes a large amount of TCP/IP (many book that claim to be about networking are actually a only focusing on ethernet and TCP/IP) and then dive into the details you feel that you need on the web, knowing that networking is one the the best documented subject on the Internet.

Still, one must admit that stripped down of the chit-chat parts, this book would be one of the best reference on TCP/IP out there...

4.0 out of 5 stars Teaches important TCP/IP protocols without putting you to sleep, July 6 2008
By

This review is from: The TCP/IP Guide: A Comprehensive, Illustrated Internet Protocols Reference (Hardcover)
I was very tempted to give this book 5 stars for it's organization, topic depth and ability to teach a pretty complex subject without losing the reader or boring him to death. The only reason I didn't was I felt the book could have been trimmed down a little because there were too many unnecessary sections. It's one heck of a weighty tome! For example IMHO the IP class and subnet addressing chapters went on for too long and the early chapters concerning name resolution could have been cut altogether since they just give background information leading up to DNS without explaining the nuts and bolts of DNS. However, I would still highly recommend this book if it's your 1st or only TCP/IP book you are going to buy because of it's easy reading style, which is rare for TCP/IP books. Coming from a non-networking software background I found this book immensely helpful on my way to becoming a network S/W engineer.

Remember you can read this book for free on the web if you don't mind staring at a screen since that's where it originated.
