Set 50 years after the climactic events of the original Red Faction, Red Faction: Guerrilla is a third-person shooter that allows players to take the role of an insurgent fighter with the newly reestablished Red Faction guerilla movement on Mars as they battle for liberation from the oppressive Earth Defense Force. Red Faction: Guerrilla redefines the limits of destruction-based gameplay with a huge open-world, fast-paced guerilla-style combat, 16-player online multiplayer and true physics-based destruction.
In the year 2075, the Earth Defense Force (EDF) received a distress signal from a small mining facility on the surface of Mars. A group of rebels calling themselves the Red Faction had overthrown the ruthless Ultor Corporation after years of oppression. The EDF responded by launching a fleet of warships to Mars to aid the miners, bring Ultor to justice and restore order to the Martian colonies. In order to ensure safety and security for the newly liberated colonists, the EDF set up command posts and bases across the planet. Initially, under the EDF's rule, the people of Mars prospered: colonists established homesteads, built towns and independent mining operations and began to stake and work their mining claims. But the more things change on Mars, the more they stay the same. The troubles began with colonists being driven from their homes and mining claims by greedy, Earth-based corporations. Then came a 50 year turn of events that saw the EDF adopting the heavy-handed tactics that it once stood against. Yet in doing so it also instilled a deep-seated resentment among the miners and settlers of the Martian colonies. One of these new Martians is miner Alec Mason, whose dream of a new life carved out of the course Martian soil was crushed in the face of EDF-ordered curfews, detention centers, beatings, mass arrests and personal tragedy. But as powerful as the EDF is, there is resistance. Mason and a small group of revolutionaries have banded together, taken up the Red Faction name and pledged to again bring about a free Mars. And though their enemy has changed, their battle cry remains unchanged: "Better Red than Dead." Key Game Features:
You don't stand a chance against the EDF using standard military tactics. The only recourse when the few stand against the many is the use of hit and run tactics. Learn the routes of the patrols and quickest ways in and out of EDF strongholds. By studying these things you can instinctively know when to attack, and when to wait for a better opportunity. Ambushes are also useful in thinning EDF ranks. Remote charges and proximity mines are your best friend when preparing an ambush. A few well-placed charges on the structural supports of a bridge can do wonders for stopping a convoy dead in its tracks. Above all else, remember this: guerilla tactics are not about fighting fair, they are about winning. |

A Satisfying Experience,

Red Faction Guerrilla is a game that was on my radar even before I purchased a Playstation 3. An open-world game that concentrates on complete destruction is just as fun as it sounds. The combat and building destruction is very satisfying. The sledge-hammer combat is the most satisfying of it's kind. The physics of the way the buildings can be destroyed is nothing short of amazing. There are a few negatives that keep the game from being great though. The story is as bare-bones as you can get in a current generation A+ title and the handling of the vehicles can be touchy. The graphic are nice but the ugly wasteland that is the surface of Mars be rough on the eyes after a while. On the other hand, some may like the minimal story because you always have a steady flow of action with few interuptions. The pacing of the missions and the optional side quests are another strength of RFG. You never feel like you are grinding to do things, unless you are going for 100% completion of course. The online for me was extremely fun. The game was fun enough for me that I was willing to grind through the online trophies towards a coveted platinum trophy, and still want to play some more. I usually sell my games once I'm done with them but this is one of my few 'keepers'. I would highly recommend RFG to anyone who likes action, open-world, or something different (destruction!) in their games. - 5/5

Years ago, the Red Faction freed mars from the Tyranny of mega company Ultor. The Earth Defense Force was brought in to keep the peace. Now the EDF is the oppressor and the Red Faction must rise to free Mars once more. Although it carries forward the Red Faction brand and some of the plot points, there are many attributes of Guerrilla that has been changed when compared to it's ancestors. The story missions for RF:G are linear. You can navigate a map to get to each mission by walking, driving, and eventually with a little bit of jet-packing. As you complete the story missions you'll liberate areas, thereby unlocking a new region. In each new region there is at least one safe-house. Safe-houses serve as jump points so you can quickly move from one area to another. It's at safe-houses where you can also purchase upgrades, reload your weapons (if you can't find a weapon cache out on the field), and there will also be a vehicle handy for you (if you don't want to hi-jack someone). In between story missions there are a large number of side-missions you can take part in, as well as the occasional spontaneous mission you'll get a notification of over the radio. In fact there's so many side missions available that despite there being a large variety of missions types, some of them manage to still get repetitive. Mission types include: - Vehicle Transports: This is a race against the clock as you try and drive a variety of vehicles back to a safe house. - Demolition training: Try and take down a building or structure in a set time under specific conditions with limited resources. - Demolition: Destroy points of interest to the enemy, ranging from wind turbines, to bridges, to barracks. - Offensive raids: Join a group of Red Faction members to take out squads of EDF soldiers, and destroy key buildings. - Defensive stances: Protect a location from an EDF attack until their forces are depleted. - Rescue operations: Free a group of hostages from an EDF facility, and get as many as you can back to a safe-house. - Convoy Interference: Stop groups of trucks from getting to their destination. - Hunt & Retrieve: Follow couriers and traitors carrying vital intelligence to their drop-off point. Then kill them, steal the intel, and communicate it back to base. - Ride Shotgun: Man the gun-turret on the back of vehicle, and try to rack up enough damage by destroying buildings and vehicles. - Bonus tasks: Such as finding ore deposits for mining, and finding radio tags which will unlock new missions. To help you complete all of these mission types, you'll have a variety of weapons to choose from. These include your standard guns and rifles as well as rocket launchers, lighting guns, nano-disintegrators, explosive buzz-saw-blade throwers, mines, remote bombs, and of course sledgehammers. You can only carry 4 weapons at a time and the sledgehammer is one you always have on you. You won't mind not being able to swap it out though, since it can make quick work of smaller buildings and EDF troops. When out on a mission, if you think you've brought the wrong tools, there's usually a weapons chest where you can reload and swap out which weapons you're carrying. Weapons can be upgraded as well. Upgrades will allow you to make some weapons more lethal, let you carry more ammo, allow you to use different types of ammo, and more. Other types of upgrades are also available such as armor, a jet-pack, mining upgrades. You purchase upgrades with "salvage" which is collected from the remains of destroyed buildings, destroyed vehicles, and mined ore deposits. You can also earn salvage by completing various missions. Adding to all these components are the EDF presence meter and Moral meter. Completing certain missions will reduce EDF presence. The lower the EDF presence, the easier it is to complete other objectives. In turn, when you complete certain missions the Moral meter will be raised. The higher the moral, the more people will pick up arms and join in the fight while you're completing a task. High moral also translates to better equipped weapon caches that can be found throughout the maps. Moral can also be lowered if you accidentally shoot, hit, or run over other Red Faction members. And considering how they like to crowd around any vehicle you jump in, and run into the line of fire, it's quite likely that you'll find yourself doing this every now and then. Since destroying large structures suggests that physics played a big part some may be disappointed. The walls of buildings seem thin, and it is possible to bust up 4 walls and 3 corners of a building before it falls down. This however really didn't bother me, because unrealistically sturdy buildings simply meant I had more to destroy! The action is pretty steady, and the only thing that seemed to slow it down was all the driving, which can get a little tiresome; especially with some of the targets that were far from safe-houses. But generally speaking the large chunk of land to explore populated with plenty of missions and lots of destruction add up to a very fun game. There were no real mind-blowing moments for me, but the entertainment it did provide in was consistent and enjoyable.

I wish amazon.com reviews were synced to the .ca website. If they were, then I wouldn't be the first person to be reviewing this game, and trust me, this game deserves better than not having any reviews. I'll admit that I never played the first 2 games, and I was worried that I wouldn't understand the story. Luckily for me this game doesn't have much of a story. That may sound like a bad thing, but this game doesn't need one. Most games rely heavily on story, the game play can be seriously lacking but it is saved by a good story. This game doesn't need a good story to save it, it can do it on it's own. You can destroy absolutely everything in the game, except for the ground. You see a huge tower, but you're out of bombs, what do you do? Well you just take your trust sledgehammer and smash it piece by piece until the whole thing falls over. Sound good so far? Did I mention that this is a free roam game that takes place on Mars, and that the map is huge? The only negative that I can really think of is that sometimes the rubble from a building you destroyed disappears, but that is so minor that it is hardly worth mentioning. My only question for you is, why are you reading this and not playing this game?
