awesome,

Consider this post-rock's problem child. TNT marked a confluence of avant-garde jazz, indie rock and minimalist lite-techno that circuitously landed itself in territory carefully avoided by traditional rock albums: easy listening. Never too abrasive, yet consistently challenging, TNT was like a hypnotic snowglobe that refused to settle without ever having required shaking. Tortoise showcased their musicians' talents with an improviser's bent, leaving behind the sometimes production-centric electronic dub leanings of Millions Now Living Will Never Die in favor of a more inspired, organic feel. You can feel the groove in the album's opening minutes: fragmented loose drum forms slowly take shape behind scattered angular guitar chords, only to fall perfectly in line for a subdued, but determined, steady full-circuit instrumental jam. From there the doors are thrown wide open until the mesmerizing tones of "Everglade" float you home. Tortoise let you inside for this one, so just keep it down and don't touch anything.

something quite different...,

with the average instrumental rock/classical stuff going with bands like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Mogwai, sigur Ros, and perhaps the most unique of all... Tortoise. why yes, we can all agree that most of this "post-rock" type stuff is getting quite repetitive. but Tortoise is actually quite different, trying to keep away from that. most Tortoise fans say TNT is Tortoise's best release. i highly disagree. while TNT is a pretty good album, "Millions now living will never die" is easily their finest work. TNT shining moments are songs like "Everglades" and "Jetty". about half of the album is good. the rest is kind of mediorce. all I suggest is if your purchasing one Tortoise album, make it "Millions now living will never die". Trust me.

Solid all around,

A very solid record, not a bad track found here. This is not music you would listen to with friends, but it is perfect for mornings or evenings alone as well as for driving at night. I think the song "the Equator" is the finest electronic song I have ever heard. I imagine this would be the music that would play in the background of a movie as someone ran through the rain forest at night. Very vibrant and imaginative textures. You won't be dissapointed.
