I stumbled upon the album's lead single "Sulk" while digging about Youtube for new music as I often do. I'll admit I was drawn in by the bizarre cover art of the woman (though it reminds me of Harmony Korine's characters in the movie "Trash Humpers" if you're familiar -- this is off-topic though).
I was instantly hooked by the song's loaded synth, amazing beat and the lead singer's very stand-out vocal style. I looked further into the band and I'm in love with this, their debut album. This Toronto-based duo has crafted an eerie, pumping, spacey and addicting album full of many gems. My favorites include "Dressed For Space", "Sulk", "Shoom", "F.T.F" (one of two songs where you hear the elusive, raunchy female vocalist) and "Bulbform" -- but honestly the only song I am not too keen on is "Heaven" which I am sure will grow on me eventually. The only way I could describe the sound is like a combination of a grimier Crystal Castles fused with the vocal similarities of Tonetta (two more Toronto-based musical artists) -- but without the repetitiveness of the former and the obnoxiousness of the latter (search Tonetta on Youtube to see what I mean...)
I would highly recommend this album to anyone. It's great enough to purchase oppose to downloading and I am sure the band could use the support.
Just for reference, other favorite artists of mine include: Lykke Li, Björk, Kanye West, Bon Iver, Joanna Newsom, The xx, Sufjan Stevens, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Mac Miller, Kid Cudi, Duran Duran, Gotye, Of Monsters & Men, Santigold, Devendra Banhart, Lana Del Rey and the late, extremely talented Amy Winehouse. I would not compare Trust or their album to any of these artists/groups, but like I said for sheer reference.

Trust is one of the most exciting new bands I've heard in quite a while. This Canadian duo consists of Robert Alfons and Maya Postepski (who's also in Austra). This debut CD (TRST) is released through the Arts & Crafts label. Regarding the music, it's alternatively danceable, moody and introspective. Very synth-based, but the sounds are very rich. A few of the songs are more immediate and beat-heavy, especially Sulk, Chrissy E and Dressed For Space. The CD as a whole works very well, and as a debut is very impressive. The singer's voice is very distinctive and I like it a lot. If you're looking for new talent, this may be the band for you.

Quite a surprise

It's strange you know? I went to go pick up my copy of Asphyx:Deathhammer, and in the shop (MagnoliaThunderpussy), this CD was being played. Now coming from a guy who listens to mainly death and black metal, this will sound very weird. I like this, this is very cool, and interesting. It is haunting, dark, loud, and all tripped out and just pretty much draws you in from start to finish. Once it is over it kind of makes you sad, and you just have to put it back on, only on repeat the next time. I sincerely recommend this to anyone who is into any genre. Its really that good. Unfortunately I cant exactly draw any comparisons to anything, its that unique. You should check it out, give it a spin and give it a chance, I think it will shock you. Truly amazing stuff.

Best album of 2012 for me

I am a musician and a lover of music in general, but I've never been very good at putting my thoughts into words when it comes to describing what I like. However, I did want to take the time to write this review and say that this album is amazing. I am a fan of many genres, and I find that the songs here appeal to almost everything I like about popular music across the board. It's one of those rare albums that doesn't have a single bad track, though certain titles like "Shoom", "Dressed for Space", and "FTF" are certainly standouts. I've always cared more about voice than lyrics, and the lead singer's voice is both unique and captivating, even if you can't understand half of what he is saying. Honestly, I think that's part of the appeal here. The songwriting, vocals, and the dark electronic sounds all add up to a mysterious and engrossing listening experience that stands well above its contemporaries. It's as good for dancing as it is for listening alone with headphones, and only gets better with multiple listens. Highly recommended for fans of rock, electronic, techno, or pretty much any type of popular music. Very few bands do what they do as well as Trust has done with this debut album.

let's party like it's 1989

back when i was in high school there was a club near my house called the ivy tower. they played stuff like sisters of mercy, front 242, new order, nitzer ebb, bauhaus, siouxsie, depeche, etc. all the freakie deakies came out en masse (ok, that's a slight exaggeration) and we danced until, well, midnight (remember, this was high school!) and it was a great time.
trust's 'trst' would have fit right in that mix. right from the get go, 'shroom' gets the magical techno show off to a rip-roaring good time. robert alfon's vocals drift from sounding like a nasally peter murphy at the height of 'bela lugosi's dead' to a less-theatrical male counterpart to glass candy's ida no. he's a tough one to peg down, but i say that as a compliment. you're never quite sure which alfon you're going to get.
the synths on a majority of the tracks are nothing short of...locomotive? pulsating? thunderous? menacing? pick your superlative. but which ever one you do pick, rest assured they'll bat you over the head until you scream for mercy. this is a heavy, heavy, heavy synth record and it's completely awesome (so much so, i almost went and dyed my hair black. again).
having said all of that, the great thing about 'trst' is that despite all it's menacing overtones, the songs themselves are still very sharp, full of tight, catchy melodies, and hook-filled choruses. it's not especially easy to pull off a full-fledged, heavy synth album without enduring a joke or two; but trust expertly pulls it off with enough flair and cajones to make even the gothiest of goths crack a smile. true story.
so, maybe i will go dye my hair black and party like it's 1989. it's not such a bad place to go.
