4.0 out of 5 stars Good for ABSOLUTE BEGINNERS, Sep 29 2005

...if you have absolutly no experience with t'ai chi beforehand. I had not and this dvd was perfect for me. I mainly got it for the 1 lb. chi ball (which I couldn't find anywhere else). The book is not big but conatins excerpts from Ross' book and is interesting. The DVD contains 2 sections: Upper Body Chi and T'ai Chi Beginners.

Upper Body Chi has a short introduction and is continued by an uninterupted session of movements using the chi ball, set in the Colorodo Rockies. I found it fairly easy to follow but more importantly was fun!

T'ai Chi for Beginners is where you should start off with if you have absolutly NO experience with t'ai chi. Set in a Colorodo Aspen grove, it is introduced by Ross and followed by an alignment sequence. Then in the solo forms sequence, various movements are introduced, practicing each separately several times, each time adding the new movements to the previous ones. At the end, the entire sequence is brought together.

This DVD has great quality and great music. However, you cannot skip past the introductions since each segment is only one track/chapter. This means that during the T'ai Chi for beginners section, you need to fastforward to the entire sequence if that's all you want to do. I have done it four times and I wish I could ONLY see the end sequence. Also, Ross sometimes says 'move your right hand' when he actually moving his left. Most of the time he is not contradictory so it makes it confusing to follow along since you are following a mirror image. I had to play the last move on slow motion to finally get it down. I could see that if you already knew some tai chi, the T'ai Chi Beginners program would be completely boring and useless, but the weighted ball and Upper Body Chi and maybe the introductions may be worth it.

Overall, great introduction to T'ai Chi, great value, great production value but with some technical kinks. I am looking forward to getting his other DVDs.

this CD is a very good beginning for a novice at Tai Chi. It is a little difficult because you have to reverse what you are looking at but it is good practice at knowing your rt and lt leg and hand from one another. The scenery and the teacher are breathtakingly awesome! It is worth the price to feel as if you are right there doing Tai Chi with that beautiful scenery as a backdrop. Tai Chi is very relaxing and ,yet, a great workout.

T'ai Chi for Beginners is perfect for my needs. I mainly follow the upper body routine. It is a great way to stretch and using a one pound ball enhances the workout. It is gentle, easy and good for someone who has physical limitations, i.e. I have nerve referral pain in my calf. I am 70 years old and keep on keepin on!
