5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome and Artistic "live" Studio Set, Sep 4 1999

This review is from: Take the a Train (VHS Tape)
This film, shot in 1962 features the Ellington Band at thier peak. The original production, funded by a Goodyear Tire Co. music promotion program has been recently restored and re "printed" from the original 35mm color masters.

The setting is a "live" studio concert arrangement, with several pithy introductions by "the piano player". Included among the half-dozen tunes in this gem are a rather frenetic if not amazing reprise of Paul Gonsalves's Newport marathon, albeit in a different tune, "Blow-by-Blow" and a great rhythm section/drum solo number to close the set: "Rockin' in Rhythm / Kinda' Dukish".

This is truly a GREAT film,...runs about 23-25 minutes and was way above my expectations. This was the band that stood apart from all other Jazz bands in the 50's and 60's.....A GOOD CHOICE!
