Book Description

This is the story of a son’s caregiving for a loving Mother with Alzheimer’s disease (AD). It tells of his opportunity to help a gentle, joyful, and loving soul who had done more for him than anyone else on earth. During their eleven-year journey through the disease, they overcame all challenges and arrived at a peaceful end.

This account covers AD and caregiving on multiple levels from multiple perspectives. The levels are represented by the various facets of the disease. The perspectives are from the caregiver, care recipient, witnesses, and the support staff. In brief, the book flows through the following topics: the decision to make the caregiver commitment; receiving the AD diagnosis and working with it; family conflict at the time of parental caregiving;; the importance of forgiveness; nursing homes; the overwhelming benefit and practice of love and laughter between caregiver and care recipient; facing the approaching death of one’s AD patient; picking up the pieces after the loss and the individual issue of mourning; reflections on lessons learned from the caregiving process; moving on; and other matters related to this particular pair of people.

Caregiving provided an opportunity to act completely out of love for another person. This love was expressed in various ways and evolved to perhaps the highest form—the joyful giving and receiving of unconditional love between two friends who are devotedly committed to each other’s welfare and the well-being of humanity as a whole.

When he made the decision to be his mother’s caregiver, the author had no idea how long the caregiving would last; how hard it would be; nor even the slightest clue of what family problems lay ahead. And, he had not even imagined the great spiritual dividends he would receive when all was said and done. What he did know was that it was the right thing to do. At that point, the joys, as well as the trials and tribulations, lay straight ahead.

5.0 out of 5 stars Taking Care of Mother, Taking Care of Me, Jun 25 2008

THis is a very unusual book that explores the situation of taking care of ones aging parents. THis is a very very helpful book for those of us dealing with reality of parents, family, siblings, their interrelationships, and what we can expect as we go down this rewarding but usually exhausting road.

It helped me immensely and it has helped many others too. Told with extreme intelligence and understanding with a view towards helping us grasp what is happening and realizing what is normal in this difficult situation.

I give this one a 5 out of 5.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read for all caregivers and practitioners, Oct 13 2006
By Susan Berg "alzheimersideas" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Taking Care of Mother, Taking Care of Me (Paperback)
I have seen first hand how the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease or a related dementia can strike fear into a family member's heart So many questions run through his/her mind. What should I do? How will I cope? What can I expect? These are just a few of the questions asked. It's great to have a support system, but one is not always available. That's why reading about the experiences of a person who has gone through what is about to be happen is so important. Taking Care of Mother, Taking Care of Me gives the reader a unique insight into caring for a loved one with memory impairment. .The author, Heydon Buchanan, is frank and honest about the experience. This is so helpful because often bad times are just not talked about. He shares with the reader how he handled difficult and delicate situations. He shows the reader that times are not always bleak and that going through this experience can make one a stronger person. But most importantly, he shows one how to laugh despite the bad times and how laughter can be the best medicine.
Another important aspect of this book is geared to professionals involved in the care of a person with Alzheimer's disease. Despite their best efforts, sometimes they may forget about the feelings of family members. This book will give them a dose of reality which they sometimes need.
Share the journey with Mr. Buchanan whether you are a loved one, caregiver, friend, expert or someone in between.

5.0 out of 5 stars Caring for a Loved One Suffering from Dementia, Jun 17 2006
By Ann M. Moody - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Taking Care of Mother, Taking Care of Me (Paperback)
This book is the best one I have read that explains what it is like to care for a loved one suffering from Alzheimer's Disease. It is thorough. It shows what often happens when family members disagree about how to care for the loved one: who should make the decisions; who will handle the inevitable expenses. This book shows the heartbreak when siblings not only refuse to share the day-to-day care--but to the shock of the author--actually fight for control of the loved one's money and her right to loving care. As is often the case, one family member ends up shouldering the entire burden.

I recommend this book to anyone who is facing the struggle with how to care for a loved one who is suffering from Alzheimer's Disease.
