Absolutely Fantastic!,

This review is from: Taking Charge Of Your Fertility 10th Anniversary Edition: The Definitive Guide to Natural Birth Control, Pregnancy Achievement, and Reproductive Health (Paperback)
I went through and read some of the bad reviews this book got before adding my own, and I can't agree with any of them! Some say that it's only written for people who are really fertile, and not for people struggling with infertility....I disagree! I've been trying for a year now to get pregnant, I've been charting for about four months of that, and I've read all kinds of information online about infertility, but I was still amazed at the amount of information I didn't have. No, she can't tell you what's wrong with you, but she teaches you how to chart and be aware of what's going on with your body so that when you DO go in to see a fertility specialist you can speak intelligently with them rather than going in without a clue. There were other reviews that made it sound like all the information she gave was basic, and only good for people who have the 28-day cycle. Wrong again! She emphasizes time and again that no two women are alike, everyone's cycle is different, even sometimes from month to month, but she teaches you how to properly chart it so that you can figure out what's going on. Maybe a stressful situation delayed your ovulation one month, or maybe you're not ovulating at all, but you can learn to figure these things out for yourself by charting. One other review talked about it being full of "feminist rhetoric". I don't even know what she's talking about! I'm very conservative myself, and pretty old-fashioned in my viewpoints, but all Ms. Weschler talks about is taking charge of your own body and knowing how it works. It was amazing to me to read and realize how much I didn't know. I even went to my family doctor to tell him I was having trouble concieving and when I tried showing him my fertility charts all he said was, "Wow! You can really tell when you're ovulating by your temperature?" Shouldn't this be something that even a family doctor is aware of? It's pretty basic biology if you ask me, but all we're taught in sex-ed is the 28-day cycle theory. So while this book can't give you all the answers as to why you can't concieve, it can certainly help you learn to read your own body so that you can help your fertility doctor figure things out. In talking to a number of friends who also had trouble concieving I've been amazed at how many still don't have a clue when they actually ovulate. I found it incredibly easy to read, full of humor, and full of good advice. She repeats herself a bit in places, but she's only trying to emphasize certain points, probably for women who skip around and read rather than just going straight through. Once I am finally able to concieve and have a baby (hopefully), I plan on using this book to practice natural family planning as well, and I'll probably continue to use it as I get older for the information it contains on menopause.
