From a dead man emerging from a hole in the cabin floor in Ambrose Bierce's "The Night-Doings at 'Deadman's'" and Mrs. Crowe's tale of supernatural experiences in polite Victorian society, to Richard Burton's "authentic" account of a haunting in the Castle of Weixelstein in 1559 to Emily Bronte's poem "The Horrors of Sleep" about a mystic world that exists just beyond the frontiers of ours, this collection resurrects two dozen eerie tales of suspense and horror.

About the Author

R. Chetwynd-Hayes had a publishing career that lasted more than forty years. He produced thirteen novels, twenty-five collections of stories, and edited twenty-four anthologies. In 1989 both the Horror Writers of America and the British Fantasy Society presented him with Life Achievement Awrds, and he was the Special Guest at the 1997 World Fantasy Convention in London. His stories have been translated into numerous languages around the world. He died in 2001.

Stephen Jones is the winner of three World Fantasy Awards, three Horror Writers Association Bram Stoker Awards, and three International Horror Guild Awards, as well as being a Hugo Award nominee and a sixteen-times recipient of the British Fantasy Award. I bought this book because I loved the first collection on Ghost Stories done by Chetwynd Hayes.

This one is about half as thick and many of the stories are just not as good in my opinion.

Still, if you like horror short stories, this isn't a bad buy.

I bought this book thinking the stories would be intriguing and captivating; like most ghost stories are. This book made me almost fall asleep. If it's not the ending of each story that makes you want to scream out loud, it's the boring plot and zero climax. Luckily I got this book in the clearance section at a book outlet.
