If You Think Your Music Collection Is Weird, Check This Out, Oct 23 2004

Tales From The Rhino is a virtual cornucopia of obscure rarities that venture into musical genres that were previously avoided by homo sapiens. However, where else can you find these classics?
"Whole Lotta Love" and "2001 Sprach Kazoostra" by the nimble throated Temple City Kazoo Orchestra.
The Honeys, featuring vocals by Diane Rovell, Ginger Blake (AKA Sandra Glantz), and Marilyn Rovell Wilson (Brian's ex-wife and mother of Carnie and Wendy) on the teen anthem "Running Away From Love".
"Bermuda" by Roky Erickson, former frontman of The 13th Floor Elevators (with a history of substance abuse similar to Syd Barrett's).
"Walk On The Kosher Side" by Gefilte Joe & The Fish makes Lou Reed lose sleep at night.
"Pipeline" by The Bombay Beach Boys makes me want to get out my boogie board, but I suffer from blunt abdominal trauma.

The early days of the hippest label ever..., Aug 29 2000

Wow. For anyone who likes novelty music this thing's an absolute gold mine--everything from the all-kazoo version of "Whole Lotta Love" to Seth Kirkland's "Famous Jews", which was a big hit on Dr. Demento but unreleased for years. In the meantime, Adam Sandler wrote a song that was more or less the same gag, but he had a record deal. Too bad for Seth. The second disc is a little less enjoyable than the first, but they're still very solid efforts and worth their weight in platinum for fans of Big Daddy, or Wildman Fischer, or any of the other stars in the Rhino galaxy. At last, a doo-wop version of the national anthem with CD quality sound!

This is a limited edition 2 CD collection, featuring some of the original material released by Rhino Records before they became almost exclusively a reissue label. It is signed by "The Rhino Brothers" (Richard Foos & Harold Bronson).
The first disc features about an hour of some of the novelty songs released by Rhino. Many of these tracks will be familiar to listeners of the Dr. Demento show, including the classics "Pencil Neck Geek", "Fish Heads" and "The Homecoming Queen's Got a Gun". The lesser known songs are funny, too, if you are interested in novelty songs.
Disc two features some of the original rock songs released by Rhino over the years. The only actual hit here is "At This Moment" by Billy Vera & the Beaters, which went to #1 after being featured on Family Ties. But most of the other material is also good. I especially like "Bermuda" by Roky Erickson, "In and Out of My Life (In a Day)" by the Pandoras and "Black Book" by Rank & File.
And that's "The Rhino Records Story".
