Product Description

Product Description

In this charming collectible, a selection of Charles and Mary Lamb’s classic prose retellings of Shakespeare’s plays are beautifully illustrated by acclaimed artist Joëlle Jolivet. The Lambs’ Shakespeare, familiar to readers since the 1800s, gets a modern twist from Jolivet’s vibrant and colorful art; Jolivet re-imagines the princes, royalty, fools, and villains from Shakespeare’s world as colorful, striking characters. From Much Ado About Nothing to Macbeth, each story features pages of illustrations that are both irreverent and wholly appropriate. Enclosed in a die-cut slipcase, the book is the perfect gift for Shakespeare fans at any age.

About the Author

Charles Lamb (born 1775) and his sister Mary Lamb (born 1764) are best known for their prose adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays, Tales from Shakespeare.

Joëlle Jolivet is an internationally acclaimed illustrator. The New York Times gave her book 365 Penguins “top marks in math and art,” and Copley News Services says it’s “a heck of a lot of fun.” Publishers Weekly called her books “vibrant/dazzling” and School Library Journal said they “are aesthetically impressive as they are informative.”

3.0 out of 5 stars Don't be fooled, May 22 2009
By H2Steacher - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Tales From Shakespeare (Hardcover)
This is a beautifully crafted book. The jacket, the paper, the artwork are all of superior quality. Definitely a collectible-ish type of book. However, be warned: It is not the same Charles and Mary Lamb version as others! Those versions contain 20 abridged tales of Shakespeare's plays; this version only tells 6. I don't rightly remember all of them, but I know "Hamlet", "Midsummer Night's Dream", "Macbeth", and "Romeo and Juliet" were included.

If one is satisfied with just these tales, then I can tell you to buy this book. On the other hand, if you want all 20 tales (as I did), you are better off buying another version.

5.0 out of 5 stars A collectible for all ages, Mar 2 2008
By Midwest Book Review - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Tales From Shakespeare (Hardcover)
Joelle Jolivet is an internationally-acclaimed illustrator while Charles and Mary Lamb are known for the 1700s prose adaptations of Shakespeare's plays. They join forces in the finely illustrated TALES FROM SHAKESPEARE, a collectible for all ages pairing lovely prose retellings of plays with Jolivet's beautiful drawings. Stories pack in the best of modern and traditional worlds in a selection of highly recommended works.

My 10 year old daughter is reading this collection of Shakespeare. She likes the look and feel of the book and has enjoyed the stories. We simply wish there were more stories in this collection.
