I found this book to be very interesting. It's style may be different, but perhaps adds something to the book. Each chapter focuses on one individual in the story (hence TALES in the title). The characters all live on the planet of Jaspre (the writer has written many scifi books). Scientists have installed a satelite called Argus to provide more light for the people in Lumisland and the surrounding areas. But Argus provided the people who lived closest to Argus with unusual powers. People could ski without feeling tired, some people had healing powers and others had the gift of foresight. However, it is unclear as to whether or not these adavantages/powers/gifts are really good for the people. One man named Anders Alwhen has his own "cult"/colony that lives very near Argus. They try to procreate so that their offspring will be able to fully utilize the power from Argus without negative effects. Each reader will interpret Anders Alwhen differently. I thought he was crazy and become so obesessed with Argus that it ultimately destroyed him.
Anyway, each of the seven characters that Caraker develops on the planet of Jaspre, must grapple with the question of finding out who they are and where their place in the world. They must decide whether or not the cause of Argus is more important than family, friends, and their own livelihood. They learn through various trials and difficulties in life that thw power of Argus isn't necessary in order to make them happy, or better, or whatever it is they personally struggle with.
The book challenges readers with certain questions about their own lives. Are they seeking something unattainable? Are they seeking something that will become an obession and ultimately bring them to harm? Good read. Well-written. Fun.
