Don't look past this one!, Nov 9 2009

What you are looking at is two books of the "Alternative Oz" series, which are only loosely based on the series most are familiar to.
To start, Dorothy is named Ellie, and this is not the biggest change yet (don't want to spoil anything).
These series by the IMO one of the greatest Russian writer of all time tend to be more mature than the "Wizard of Oz", incorporating political and science fiction themes, much like the Strugatski Brothers' works. But there is humor as well, so don't expect something like LOTR.
If you are interesting in fantasy/science fiction, buy this collection of two books.

Great book, complex language, Jan 18 2010

This is a great book. I've read it as a kid in Russian and now reading it to my son and wife in English. My only complaint it the complexity of the language used in English translation. My wife is a native English speaker and she is having issues understanding what this or that word means. I have read all of these books as a little kid and do not remember having any issues whatsoever understanding the language (Russian).
Otherwise - a great read and can't wait to get a hold of the first book in English.
