Susan Howatch is one of my favorite authors, and I find it impossible to find fault with any of her novels. This trilogy of short novels is suspensefully plotted and employs the usual elegance of diction I expect from this author. Nevertheless, and perhaps it is due to their brevity, I did not enjoy these novels quite as much as, say, the Church of England series, or the longer works of romantic suspense.
