Book Description

June 1999
James Van Praagh is a nationally recognized medium, a frequent guest on television shows who has a two-year waiting list for personal appointments. But now he sets forth on the page his unique insights into the world beyond. Van Praagh's ability to bridge the gap between the physical and spiritual worlds was something he came to terms with slowly. By the time he reached his twenties he finally accepted the fact that he could provide proof of life after death by relaying specific messages containing names, places, and events known only to the people who sought him out--and to the spirits being contacted. He recounts here his experiences in helping grieving people come to terms with the loss of a loved one. The reader shares in many personal and profound stories, such as the devastated mother who finds reason to live after hearing the sweet message from her courageous little girl who had wasted away from AIDS. Or the son, filled with heartfelt sadness, who begs--from beyond--for his mother's forgiveness because he committed suicide. Van Praagh also offers readers means for recognizing and dealing with the harrowing pain of grief in a healthy manner, as well as showing them how they, too, can contact the spirit world and recognize spirit signs that a loved one is trying to attract their attention. Inspiring, moving, and reassuring, Talking to Heaven provides a connection to a spiritual world for which millions hunger--through the insight and wisdom of an extraordinary man.

Product Description

From Amazon

As in the case of James Redfield's The Celestine Prophecy, once in a while a book comes along that unexpectedly soars to the bestseller lists simply because it feeds a specific spiritual hunger. Talking to Heaven is one such book. Based on the personal insights and memories of highly acclaimed medium James Van Praagh, Talking to Heaven offers comforting and startling stories about his contact with the deceased. Van Praagh could have used this text to prove that his gifts as a medium are authentic--the story about the deceased teenager who led his parents to his murderer is impressive (the result was a murder conviction)--but instead, Van Praagh offers spiritual and psychological comfort to those grappling with the loss of a loved one. He also helps readers develop their own means of talking to heaven. Even those who aren't aching for contact with the deceased will find Van Praagh's down-to-earth discussions of karma, the afterlife, and spiritual guides fascinating. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal

Van Praagh, nationally acclaimed medium, boasts the supernatural ability to communicate with the spirits of men, women, and children who have died. Using his rare ability to "talk to heaven," Van Praagh takes the listener along, as he bridges the gap between the physical and spiritual worlds. He provides comfort to those who have lost loved ones and brings back powerful messages from the other side. Many messages are of love that heals the human heart, proving that love is indeed the universal language. Read by Jonathan Marosz, this is an interesting and worthwhile listening experience. Van Praagh's stories touch a chord in all of us. Worth the trip to the pearly gates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bold and Encouraging Feb. 16 2005
Format:Mass Market Paperback
If you've lost a loved one, have psychic intuitive abilities that you are trying to figure out, if you are a fan of Jonathan Edwards or Tiffany Snow or Sylvia Browne, this book will be a pleasure. Understand what it is like to live the unique life, one where no path is there to follow, and the trail blazing is left up to you. We don't die! Just our body does! We should live each day without fear of death. And know that the ones we love are not truly gone. Just most of us can't see or hear them anymore. For those who can, they have to put up with a lot from society and religious sects. A true loving God would never disagree with communication with our loved ones who have passed. And these authors tell you that. I believe it.

This book is not only beneficial for someone who has lost a loved one, but to reaffirm there is good in mankind. I have read several books about life after death and this far exceeded my expectations. James is genuinely looking out for people's hearts and souls with his gentle nature and positive stories. A definate must read for all!!

James Von Praagh's book (and the book on tape) are not only a collection of situations, or readings he has done for others, but also includes "How-To" tips on how to get those you would like to contact to communicate with you, and how to listen, and to let them know how you would understand them, and in what ways they can communicate in simple terms.
The book is meant to be simple, and if you are looking for "evidence" then test out his simple exercises yourself, and definitely pay attention to your surroundings!
I was a bit skeptical when I first read the book the first time, then I decided to take notes, and be open to communication, and took Van Praagh's ideas on communication to task. This has opened a whole new world for me, and it's awesome! Thank you James!
Critics seem to have totally missed the point of this book! It is not a lesson on physics or science, and to apply the terms in the sme way is to totally miss the point... If you are out "looking for evidence" with skepticism, you will find what you are looking for, or what you believe you will find. This is a basic in any metaphysics, and in many religions, "seek and you shall find."
I too saw several shows on television with Mr. Von Praagh... Most students of metaphysics can tell you that if there is a "hostile" (as Janet Mitchell puts it on her book on OBEs)(non-believing) presence around, it definitely makes it not only difficult to do readings such as those he does, but to do other metaphysical tasks, such as astral projection, reading auras, and so on.
I'm not a ... for anyone who calls themselves a psychic at all, but I DO have an open mind.

1.0 out of 5 stars Are you buying this? July 25 2002
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I found this medium du jour's words patronizing and extremely difficult to believe. Much of what he writes is simplistic, vague and shallow. The age-old art of giving people want you know they want to hear has not been lost in this book. It bothers me that grieving people will pay for such shamelessly peddled drivel.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Solid Confirmation for a Newfound Psychic Oct. 19 2001
By Brenda
Format:Mass Market Paperback
During the process of kundalini, a spiritual counselor told me to read this book. There was so much I didn't understand, especially where do I go from here at the end of the process. There's a calmness found in this book's words. The last few chapters were the most helpful since they described exactly what I felt and saw. This is one of two books by James VanPraagh that was suggested reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Book March 23 2001
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I was disappointed to read some of the negative reviews of this book. I consider myself to be an educated person--I've graduated from both college and law school. I have always questioned the existence of heaven and God, especially after the recent loss of a family member. This book confirmed what I have been taught in church my entire life: heaven exists and there is absolutely a life beyond this one. It is difficult to fathom a spirit life because we are earthly. We are limited in our perception. However, this book helps you to understand the mystery of death. This book will reduce any apprehension you may have about dying and help you get back to living your life in spite of your loss.

5.0 out of 5 stars A believer Jan. 14 2001
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
I have read all of James Van Praagh's books as well as books written by others on the same subject. I am sorry for the person who gave such a poor review. Obviously that person has never had a spiritual experience and probably won't with the attitude, anger, and closed mind they presented in the review. I have also seen James on T.V. several times. He doesn't project much confidence, but that doesn't mean he isn't for real. Whether he is or isn't, it is still a fact that spirits of people and animals are around us and do try to contact us just like he says. I know this because my husband and I have been hearing our dog for three years now since she passed on to the other side. We hear her paws hit the floor from jumping down off the bed like she did for 15 years when she was alive. We are not crazy or imagining it. There is no doubt it is her and she wants us to know she is there. I have also felt her energy go through my body. There is no feeling like that one, for sure. I know that James knows what I am talking about. I also know that God makes this possible. We are not supposed to know everything there is about the spirit world while we are here on Earth. These experiences have made a true believer of me, and I thank God everyday for people like James who help us with our sorrows. Keep up the good work, James. Don't let unfortunate people discourage you. You are a messenger of God.
