Book Description

June 1999
James Van Praagh is a nationally recognized medium, a frequent guest on television shows who has a two-year waiting list for personal appointments. But now he sets forth on the page his unique insights into the world beyond. Van Praagh's ability to bridge the gap between the physical and spiritual worlds was something he came to terms with slowly. By the time he reached his twenties he finally accepted the fact that he could provide proof of life after death by relaying specific messages containing names, places, and events known only to the people who sought him out--and to the spirits being contacted. He recounts here his experiences in helping grieving people come to terms with the loss of a loved one. The reader shares in many personal and profound stories, such as the devastated mother who finds reason to live after hearing the sweet message from her courageous little girl who had wasted away from AIDS. Or the son, filled with heartfelt sadness, who begs--from beyond--for his mother's forgiveness because he committed suicide. Van Praagh also offers readers means for recognizing and dealing with the harrowing pain of grief in a healthy manner, as well as showing them how they, too, can contact the spirit world and recognize spirit signs that a loved one is trying to attract their attention. Inspiring, moving, and reassuring, Talking to Heaven provides a connection to a spiritual world for which millions hunger--through the insight and wisdom of an extraordinary man.

Product Description

From Amazon

As in the case of James Redfield's The Celestine Prophecy, once in a while a book comes along that unexpectedly soars to the bestseller lists simply because it feeds a specific spiritual hunger. Talking to Heaven is one such book. Based on the personal insights and memories of highly acclaimed medium James Van Praagh, Talking to Heaven offers comforting and startling stories about his contact with the deceased. Van Praagh could have used this text to prove that his gifts as a medium are authentic--the story about the deceased teenager who led his parents to his murderer is impressive (the result was a murder conviction)--but instead, Van Praagh offers spiritual and psychological comfort to those grappling with the loss of a loved one. He also helps readers develop their own means of talking to heaven. Even those who aren't aching for contact with the deceased will find Van Praagh's down-to-earth discussions of karma, the afterlife, and spiritual guides fascinating. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal

Van Praagh, nationally acclaimed medium, boasts the supernatural ability to communicate with the spirits of men, women, and children who have died. Using his rare ability to "talk to heaven," Van Praagh takes the listener along, as he bridges the gap between the physical and spiritual worlds. He provides comfort to those who have lost loved ones and brings back powerful messages from the other side. Many messages are of love that heals the human heart, proving that love is indeed the universal language. Read by Jonathan Marosz, this is an interesting and worthwhile listening experience. Van Praagh's stories touch a chord in all of us. Worth the trip to the pearly gates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Bold and Encouraging Feb. 16 2005
Format:Mass Market Paperback
If you've lost a loved one, have psychic intuitive abilities that you are trying to figure out, if you are a fan of Jonathan Edwards or Tiffany Snow or Sylvia Browne, this book will be a pleasure. Understand what it is like to live the unique life, one where no path is there to follow, and the trail blazing is left up to you. We don't die! Just our body does! We should live each day without fear of death. And know that the ones we love are not truly gone. Just most of us can't see or hear them anymore. For those who can, they have to put up with a lot from society and religious sects. A true loving God would never disagree with communication with our loved ones who have passed. And these authors tell you that. I believe it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Way to JumpStart Your New Year Dec 13 2003
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This time of year is the perfect time to look over the past 12 months and ask ourselves, did I do something that really count? Did I grow spiritually, spending time in reading and stimulating conversations, continuing to answer the questions that really matter? Did I share what I knew with others, to encourage and promote love and understanding? If your answer is one where you wish to do more, jumpstart your personal advancement this year by reading this book!
The author captures the reader very well, and my excitement compelled me to finish this book within a few days. I live in the San Diego area, and would invite you to also read the books of three local authors, all of which I have heard at various speaking engagements, and were extremely impressed with, and subsequently bought their books. If you haven't read their books this past year, I would recommend them for your New Year, to help create a new, more powerful and intuitive New You in 2004:

- Deepak Chopra: The Spontaneous Fulfilment of Desire
- Jack Canfield/ Mark Hansen: Chicken Soup for the Soul: Living Your Dreams (Not Local, but excellent, uplifting stories)
- Tiffany Snow: Psychic Gifts in the Christian Life - Tools to Connect
- Marie Jones: Looking for God in All the Wrong Places

5.0 out of 5 stars Talking to Heaven Nov. 1 2003
By Rebecca
Format:Mass Market Paperback
"Talking to Heaven" by James Van Praagh provided me with spiritual comfort after the loss of my brother. Praagh is a Medium who has the abilities to communicate with departed souls. As a young child, he realized that he had this special gift and has been doing it for most of his adult life. The personal insights of Praagh's work are fascinating. The many different stories of people finding that their loved ones are still present around them are enlightening. The book is well written with inspiring content. Praagh's natural writing style and his discussions of the afterlife are very easy to understand. The book is uplifting and easy to read. I have always believed in spirits and Angels. James refers to them as "Guides". My brother died a year and a half ago. It was the hardest experience I have ever dealt with. He was not only my brother but also my best friend. This book has helped me to believe that he is still with me in spirit. Even though I have never practiced Praagh's methods of contacting the dead (which he says everyone has the ability to do) I have felt the presence of my brother at different times. One such time being while I was driving in my car and thinking of him with tears rolling down my face. I asked for some kind of sign from him. In the next instant his favorite song came on the radio. I knew he was with me. The book made me understand more of what I have always believed. Knowing that our loved ones are still with us in everyday life is very comforting. This book gave me a feeling of inner peace. I think this book is a must for anyone who has an open mind whether they are grieving for someone or not. It is well written with inspiring content. It is based on the personal insights and fascinating work of James Van Praagh as a Medium. His stories heal the heart. Read more ›

James Von Praagh's book (and the book on tape) are not only a collection of situations, or readings he has done for others, but also includes "How-To" tips on how to get those you would like to contact to communicate with you, and how to listen, and to let them know how you would understand them, and in what ways they can communicate in simple terms.
The book is meant to be simple, and if you are looking for "evidence" then test out his simple exercises yourself, and definitely pay attention to your surroundings!
I was a bit skeptical when I first read the book the first time, then I decided to take notes, and be open to communication, and took Van Praagh's ideas on communication to task. This has opened a whole new world for me, and it's awesome! Thank you James!
Critics seem to have totally missed the point of this book! It is not a lesson on physics or science, and to apply the terms in the sme way is to totally miss the point... If you are out "looking for evidence" with skepticism, you will find what you are looking for, or what you believe you will find. This is a basic in any metaphysics, and in many religions, "seek and you shall find."
I too saw several shows on television with Mr. Von Praagh... Most students of metaphysics can tell you that if there is a "hostile" (as Janet Mitchell puts it on her book on OBEs)(non-believing) presence around, it definitely makes it not only difficult to do readings such as those he does, but to do other metaphysical tasks, such as astral projection, reading auras, and so on.
I'm not a ... for anyone who calls themselves a psychic at all, but I DO have an open mind.
