From the Author

I remember clearly how my interest in workplace trauma came about and how it grew. In the early 1980's I was working as a counselor at a clinic. A young woman, referred to me by the doctor, was in terrible shape. She'd just experienced her ninth holdup at work and was having flashbacks and nightmares. She was so afraid of being attacked and killed by a robber that she couldn't go out or stay at home alone. Just the thought of work brought on a panic attack. I realized she was suffering from the same trauma reactions I had seen earlier in sexual assault victims.

I then began working with bank tellers and saw how many of them suffered from the same post traumatic stress reactions we associated with Vietnam War Veterans. But it was only when I began working in an employee assistance program consultant in a hospital, that I really began to see a pattern. Nurses and patient care attendants also were shaken up by what seemed to be relatively minor incidents of abuse from patients. I began asking myself what was it about the incidents that caused nurses, bank tellers, bus drivers and secretaries to have similar trauma reactions. I realized the common denominator was about abuse, not only the more extreme forms like assault and murder, but everyday incidents of screaming, put downs and psychological head games we all experience at work and do nothing about. Bewildered employees always asked me the same questions. "Why is this happening to me? Why are I the only one falling apart? Why doesn't anyone understand what I'm going through." At the same time, I could see by the reactions of their families and employers that they were at a loss to know what to do and how to help. What I wanted to do was answer their questions and make sense of the workplace violence phenomenon. Why are so many employees affected by trauma? Why are incidents tolerated? Why do they get repeated? How can we stop the abuse and bring about change? The result is Taming the Beast: Getting Violence out of the Workplace.

4.0 out of 5 stars Violence Prevention: Case-by-Case, Jan 25 2000
By Rebecca T. Mays "beckylynne" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Taming the Beast (Mass Market Paperback)
Frema Engel's book presents a practical, hands-on approach to identifying and reducing workplace violence. Her insights into the range of aggressive acts leading to violent behaviors are illustrated in her case-by-case examples from business, health care, and social service fields. This is a "must read" book for all levels of an organization, from the board room to the break room. Problems are not only presented, but solutions are found to prevent workplace violence: zero tolerance; confidential help lines; investigation and prosecution; crisis response; employee assistance. Engel does her homework, with good research and valid application.
