Taming the Beast: Getting Violence out of the Workplace shatters the stereotype of what kind of worker suffers from post traumatic stress due to workplace violence. Nurses, teachers, retail sales clerks, flight attendants and corporate managers suffer the same symptoms as soldiers, police officers and security guards in the wake of verbal abuse, harassment or assault in the workplace. Using real stories and providing in-depth analysis of the problem in health care, education, human services, banking and retail and our largest corporations, Frema Engel shows how this problem affects hundreds of thousands of unlikely victims. She documents how a shooting rampage or other extreme incident originates in complacency about seemingly minor incidents. Taming the Beast is a practical introduction to workplace trauma for employees who want to understand how to cope with these incidents and for management who want guidance on how to respond and implement measures that will help prevent a recurrence.

From the Author

I remember clearly how my interest in workplace trauma came about and how it grew. In the early 1980's I was working as a counselor at a clinic. A young woman, referred to me by the doctor, was in terrible shape. She'd just experienced her ninth holdup at work and was having flashbacks and nightmares. She was so afraid of being attacked and killed by a robber that she couldn't go out or stay at home alone. Just the thought of work brought on a panic attack. I realized she was suffering from the same trauma reactions I had seen earlier in sexual assault victims.

I then began working with bank tellers and saw how many of them suffered from the same post traumatic stress reactions we associated with Vietnam War Veterans. But it was only when I began working in an employee assistance program consultant in a hospital, that I really began to see a pattern. Nurses and patient care attendants also were shaken up by what seemed to be relatively minor incidents of abuse from patients. I began asking myself what was it about the incidents that caused nurses, bank tellers, bus drivers and secretaries to have similar trauma reactions. I realized the common denominator was about abuse, not only the more extreme forms like assault and murder, but everyday incidents of screaming, put downs and psychological head games we all experience at work and do nothing about. Bewildered employees always asked me the same questions. "Why is this happening to me? Why are I the only one falling apart? Why doesn't anyone understand what I'm going through." At the same time, I could see by the reactions of their families and employers that they were at a loss to know what to do and how to help. What I wanted to do was answer their questions and make sense of the workplace violence phenomenon. Why are so many employees affected by trauma? Why are incidents tolerated? Why do they get repeated? How can we stop the abuse and bring about change? The result is Taming the Beast: Getting Violence out of the Workplace.
