3.0 out of 5 stars well written, but a bit of a bland read, Feb 13 2006

In what seemed like a lifetime ago, young Diana Hillard fell in love with one of her father's tenants, Tom Cole. But even though Tom returned her feelings, their love came to nothing when her proud and angry father found out about it and put an end to their relationship. Tom and his mother left the estate under a cloud and soon emigrated; while Diana was given a Season and hurriedly married off to a distant cousin, Lord Gilbert. Currently a widow, Diana is ushering her shyer and younger sister, Charlotte, through her Season, determined that Charlotte at least would marry her soul-mate, and not merely some gentleman who has the right pedigree and income. But if Diana thought that her chance at finding true love again were gone forever, she gets the shock of her life when she comes face to face with Tom Cole in her aunt's, the Dowager Viscountess Ransome, drawing room, looking stern and remote. Suddenly the impetuous and wild poetry loving girl she was begins to peek out from behind her mask as society matron. But is it too late? Will Tom forgive her family for their brutal treatment of him and his mother? And can she really hope for a second chance at love with Tom?

I'll admit that the Regency house party motif is one of my favourites. And from that point-of-view, Amanda McCabe's "A Tangled Web" does not disappoint. But if you're looking for something meatier, you might want to give this book a miss. "A Tangled Web" follows the prescribed formula necessary for a Regency house party strictly, with practically no variations. And while it was interesting to see how the younger people circle each other trying to figure how to act and what to do, the bulk of the book focused on how Tom and Diana would reconnect, which unfortunately, was a little bland. Even the addition of two fortune-hunters out to nab both Tom and Diana bring no fireworks or tension to the proceedings. So that, even though this is a very well written and pleasant read, "A Tangled Web" was a bland read nonetheless, that lacked depth and vivacity. All in all a tepid 3 star read.

3.0 out of 5 stars A Tangled Web, Feb 20 2006

Twelve years ago, Diana's young heart was broken when her stern father broke up her illicit romance with a common man, Tom Cole. She went on with life, marrying well and becoming a young widow, but never forgot Tom. Now, he has returned to her life, as wealthy American guest at one of her friend's house parties. However, before they can have a second chance, the two will have to navigate through a sea of matchmaking plots and counterplots. By the time who is to be with whom is sorted out, there might be a happily ever after in there for at least one or two couples.

*** This delightful comedy will bring a smile to your face. Diana moves from being a shy girl to a lady of dignity without losing her sparkle. This is a very positive book that will please fans of the genre well. ***
