Tao Te Ching, which can be translated from the traditional chinese to The Book of the Way and its Virtue, is an important classic Chinese text. Written around 600 bce by Taoist Lao Tzu (or Lao Tsu, Lauzi), who was a sage and keeper of records at the court of the Zhou Dynasty. The Tao Te Ching is an important compilation of maxims from a significant period in the history of Taoist Chinese philosophy, and has strongly influenced Chinese Buddhism and Neo-Confucianism. Tao Te Ching has often been ysed by Chinese poets, painters, and calligraphers as a major source of inspiration.

Tao Te ChingI have read a number of translations of Lao Tzu's "Way of the Tao" (Tao-te Ching) and recommend that if you are seriously interested in Tao-ism that you check out Wing-Tsit Chan's translation. (I have a review on that version.) A straight translation, without commentary and explanations, might make good poetry (as does Stephen Mitchell's trendy attempt) but alternative translations, and the reasons for the choices of certain translationsook, are very helpful, as are explanations of key ideas as they arise or are reiterated throughout the book. Perhaps if you want to see if this 'philosophy' is for you, a translation such as this is adequate, but if you want to read further, or to enter the deep water, spend the extra money on the better work.Way of Lao Tzu, The

If you just want a cheap, basic copy of this book then this is for you. If you want something a little more extensive or elaborating more on Lao Tzu's words and ideas - seek elsewhere.
