Book Description

Jun 5 2012 Inspector Kaldis Series

In an isolated olive grove on the idyllic Aegean island of Tinos, revered by pilgrims around the world as the Lourdes of Greece, the remains of two bodies charred beyond recognition are discovered chained together amid bits and pieces of an incinerated Greek flag.  An enraged press screams out for justice for the unknown victims, until the dead are identified as gypsies and the story simply falls off the face of the earth.

Is it a gypsy clan war, a hate crime, or something else? With no one seeming to care, the government has no interest in resurrecting unwanted media attention by a search for answers to such ethnically charged questions and orders the investigation closed.

But Andreas Kaldis, feared head of Greece’s special crimes division, has other plans. He presses on in his inimitable, impolitic style to unravel a mystery that yields more dead, a modern secret society rooted in two-hundred-year-old ways, and a nagging suspicion that his answers lay in the sudden influx of non-Greeks and gypsies to Tinos.

It is there, on Tinos, Andreas learns of priceless hoards of gold, silver, art, and precious gems quietly amassed over centuries out of the offerings of grateful pilgrims. He has found a motive for murder and an irresistible inspiration for robbery.

All that is left for Andreas to do is find the killers before more die, stop the robbery of the century, and get married in the process.

Review

“Target: Tinos is another of Jeffrey Siger’s thoughtful police procedurals set in picturesque but not untroubled Greek locales.” —The New York Times

"Mr. Siger is one of those rare writers whose finger is always on the pulse of modern day upheavals. He is never afraid to tackle and expose uncomfortable subjects—subjects most writers avoid...An authoritative and compelling voice, Mr. Siger is a master storyteller." —New York Journal Review of Books

"The author's best with so many changes of direction in the fast-paced, imaginative but very tightly plotted story that one did not know what would happen next...very gifted American author…the books are all...the best international police procedurals similar perhaps to those of Donna Leon…Highly recommended." —Eurocrime"A likable, compassionate lead; appealing Greek atmosphere; and a well-crafted plot help make this a winner." —Publshers Weekly, starred review

"Siger’s latest Inspector Kaldis Mystery throbs with the pulse of Greek culture...Make sure to suggest this engaging series to fans of Leighton Gage’s Mario Silva series." —Booklist

“A crisp style with a complex portrait of contemporary Greece to bolster another solid whodunit.”––Kirkus Reviews

"An interesting and highly entertaining police procedural for those who wish to read their way around the globe..."—Library Journal

"A fast paced thriller where the reality of modern Greece is jarred even further sideways by warring gypsy clans, a national outrage and a veteran detective told to just 'make it go away'. Andreas Kaldis is back to ruffle feathers, catch some killers and, maybe, have the happiest day of his life." —Cara Black, Author of the Aimee Leduc Investigations

"Thrilling, thought-provoking, and impossible to put down, Jeffrey Siger's Target: Tinos  takes readers into the heart of modern Greece, and also into the profound mysteries of the relationship between the Greece of today and its incomparable past. Greece has been chronicled for centuries by fine writers, and Jeffrey Siger fits right into the tradition." —Timothy Hallinan, Author of the Poke Rafferty Thrillers

"Nobody writes Greece better than Jeffrey Siger." —Leighton Gage, Author of the Chief Inspector Mario Silva Investigations

5.0 out of 5 stars Siger knocks it out of the park once again May 25 2012
By Maria A. Karamitsos - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The book is Jeffrey Siger at his best: finger so adeptly on the pulse of Greek society, telling the story which such precision and finesse, you're right in Tinos in the middle of the action. Siger's skillful storytelling keeps me hooked. I'm always sad when I finish one of his books--because I have to wait another year for the next one to come out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Greek Xenophobia July 11 2012
By Michael Sears - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Inspector Kaldis faces a confusing maze of clues on the island of Tinos. The island, which is dominated by a powerful monastery hosting a famous icon, is suddenly filled with foreign workers who are apparently being paid good wages to do nothing. Kaldis thinks that they are a distraction for a big heist at the monastery or at one of its treasure troves. But two gypsies have been brutally murdered and something sinister is going on. There are Albanian gangs, relatively petty thefts of monastery valuables, the escalating murders, but no clear suspects. Kaldis has to find the kingpin - the Shepherd - before matters get completely out of hand. All this while trying to give his bride to be the kind of attention she expects in the week running up to their wedding!
As he keeps us guessing, Siger fills the book with interesting characters, and a personal understanding of the Greek culture and lifestyle, as well as of the country's daunting current problems and growing xenophobia. A worthy successor to the excellent PREY ON PATMOS.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Greek Troubles Writ Large Jun 8 2012
By Lil Gluckstern - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
If you have been following the economic problems in Greece, this book will take you there. If you haven't, Mr. Siger really highlights how economics can effect the attitudes of the populace toward the Government, and very importantly toward immigration. This forms the backbone of the murders that take place on Tinos, an island where the Panageria Evangelista, a marvelous church, and its icons and jewelry take center stage. Siger uses Greek history and modern events to set the stage, and to highlight the issues facing most of the myriad immigrants as they seek work, and are doing some of the jobs that the formerly affluent wouldn't. Siger excels at setting the scenes of a Greece he clearly loves, but does not avoid the dark side of such beauty. The police are competent and also humorous as they balance their work with politics. The book is tautly written with an eye to keeping the reader engaged, and entertained (and a little nervous). Andreas' wedding is a gently counterpoint to the goings on, and even then...Well, you'll just have to read the book. I highly recommend Target:Tinos.
