It is one of four constituencies in Taita-Taveta District. The constituency has six wards, all belonging to the Taveta town council. The constituency was established for the 1966 elections. Constituencies of Kenya are used to select members of the Kenyan parliament. Currently there are 210 constituencies in Kenya. However, following the promulgation of the new constitution, the number of constituencies are to be increased to 290. A formula has been prescribed in the Constitution on how these Constituencies will be defined based on population numbers.
