This is a good introduction to Urdu. It provides a good overview of spoken Urdu and a more thorough study of written urdu. I wish there was more diction and focus on speaking

5.0 out of 5 stars Mere khayal se bhi hai ke vuh achhi chiz hai! Dec 28 2004
Format:Paperback
I agree that Teach Yourself Urdu is excellent course for those wishing to learn the Urdu language. Although the course is centred around vocabulary and structures required by travellers, it provides an excellent start for those who would eventually like to learn more advanced Urdu. Concepts taught are constantly reinforced through the use of dialogues and examples, both of which serve to standardize the flow of Urdu in the learner's mind and to make the reader as comfortable with written Urdu as possible. I am at the tenth lesson in the 15 lesson book and can already recognize parts of headlines on BBC Urdu or even entire headlines. Bahut shukria TY!

This is a great book. Not only do you learn how to pronounce a word or sentence but you also learn how to read and write it. The book also gives you culture tips about Pakistan and India. It also show how to make up a sentences and the chapters are broken down by following a character's jounrney in Pakistan. If you know how to write in arabic you would find writing in urdu somewhat the same but if you don't know how to write in arabic don't worry, the book also show you how to wite the begin, middle, and end part of a letter. I find this book most enjoying and I highly recommend it to anyone who would like to learn this language.
