Here it is now, unseen since its original broadcast, seven of the eight battles featuring the legendary Soviet team replete with the still mesmerizing talents of Tretiak, Kharlamov, Yakushev, Maltsev et al. The WHA squad featured a couple of '72 vets in Henderson and Frank Mahovlich but was inspired by the only international appearance of the Howe family. That would be Gordie and his sons Mark and Marty. Lest we forget Bobby Hull, Gerry Cheevers, JC Tremblay and a host of future and past NHL greats putting up a brave fight against the Soviets who edged Team Canada in a series which, like the WHA itself, was fraught with off-ice controversy, brilliant offensive play and hard-hitting action.

Simply great hockey!,

I really enjoyed this set. The 1974 series was enormously entertaining, and if you like watching the old USSR powerhouse you won't be disappointed.This is set is full value, especially if you can find it on sale. The series is worth it for the first 4 games alone. The first 2 games are remarkable, and if you don't remember exactly what happened, you think (like me) that this WHA team really had a chance to knock the Soviets off! And the first period of game 4 is a joy; I don't remember seeing a more artful and dominate Canadian performance against the Soviets. That written, games aren't one period long, and the series went 8 games ... Seeing Bobby Hull at his best, and Gordie Howe, Gerry Cheevers and JC Tremblay was like a time machine. Pat Stapleton and Paul Shmyr (slightly less so,) were the best players. The Russians are equally awesome, though its clear Tretiak wasn't at his very best. There are many beautiful goals! Four tips: - The first 4 games in Canada are fine, pretty much what you'd expect if you were watching them at the time. The colours fade a bid now and then, and the sound can fluctuate. The 3 games from Moscow are also what you'd expect from the time, as if you had to play with your rabbit ears on the TV! - Game 6 is missing about half of the colour commentary, and has a replacement commentary called in 2006. Don't bother with it. Its not helpful, talks about future results (if you don't know,) and at times is vapid. - Game 5 is missing, but I've seen a good 7 minute highlight online, which you can probably find fairly easily. Its a shame, as it looked like a hard faught game, with Canada losing a close one, 3-2. - The documentary is a very nice addition. And the series has Howie Meeker! His analysis is far and away better than that more recent blowhard. Its a real joy to hear him comment on the action. And did he get it right: just about half way through the 3rd game he says "The Canadians better start checking, because these guys are starting to play a lot like the 1972 Soviet team." Boy oh boy, did he get that right, almost down to the minute!

We can also called this one the " forgotten series". The 1972 series got a lot of publicity but not the 1974 summit. But believe me it's great hockey like 1972. Sometimes more exciting! We have a chance to see in action great player like Bobby Hull, Gordie Howe, Geery Cheevers, Frank Mahovlich, Pat Stapleton, J-c Tremblay, Paul Shmyr, Mike Walton, Andre Lacroix, Johnny Mckenzie and more...The result for Canada was much closer than it's look liked. ( 1 win 4 losses ans 3 tieds ) Canada did better at home than the 1972 team! And the power play scored 9 goals ( 1972 only 2) Thanks to Bobby Hull! The quality of the image is excellent for the games played in Canada. For the games played in Moscow it's the same thing of the 1972 dvd. The problem was the original broadcast via satellite. But the game quality is good overall. Great to see post game interview with Gerry Cheevers, Bobby Hull, Paul Henderson, Gordie Howe, Ralph Backstrom and soviets players of the game too. Also include , a Replica of the Canadian program, audio commentary with Gordie Howe and Frank Mahovlich on game 4., a great documentary of 48 mins. on the series. Don't hesitate. Buy it now only 10 000 was made! See Bobby Hull scored 3 goals in the first period of game 4. All the great saves by Cheevers and Tretyak! If you liked 1972, see 1974, you will be amaze by the quality of hockey!!

Excellent series, but what they don't tell you is that game 5 is missing. I've seen the whole series before, sometimes with better quality than this disappointing set, and with over one hour of game 5.However, it's nice to have it finally officially released, if only the people who originally filmed and broadcasted it had not lost the original tapes, only to use third generation tapes, as mentioned in the introduction. That would only make me give it a 3 stars, maybe even a 2 and a half for quality content... However, what is the pearl in this set is a 46 minutes documentary made in 1974 (I think it was, there's no information about it, but one can guess). It gives not only highlights of all 8 games (not just 7, but all 8), but also rare, and unfortunately too short, clips of Team Canada 74 playing in Finland, Czech Republic and Sweden!!! I wish the 1972 series had shown a bit of the games played in Sweden (with the Swedes' professional "stick handling" - ask Wayne Cashman about it) and the Czech Republic (Ok, then it was called Czechoslovakia) Great documentary with rare interviews and a Bobby Hull talking about his not being chosen for the 1972 series at a banquet in Vancouver after the 4th game. I let you watch and enjoy it in all its details... Also includes commentary by Gordie Howe and Frank Mahovlich on Game 4 and a reprint of the original Canadian program. Let me know what you think. :)
