"Tell Me Baby" is the second single from the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Stadium Arcadium". Like all recent Chili Peppers singles, Warner Bros. released it as a two part deal, splitting three b-sides over two short discs.
The single itself is clearly a Chili Peppers classic-- a funky groove is laid down throughout with guitar and voice creating dense, nervous, verses and open, breezy choruses.
The b-sides on this part of the single are "Mercy Mercy" and "Lyon 6.6.06". The former has a rolling funk bassline, a churning vocal, and a great, layered sound-- it also has some of the best playing by Flea of any of the "Stadium Arcadium" material, striking a deep fingerstyle groove. The latter track is a live jam-- Flea and drummer Chad Smith race, guitarist John Frusciante sets up a noisy lead before the groove slows and the sounds get significantly more delicate, with Frusciante settling into a deep blues. As far as these sort of live improvs go, this one is pretty good.
All in all, this ends up being a pretty good single, shame they had to split it in two parts, but a worthwhile pickup for fans of the band.
