The former jazzman-turned-punk is now more middle-of-the-road than a yellow stripe. But Ten Summoner's Tales is by far the most engaging of his solo records. The singles "If I Ever Lose My Faith in You" and "Fields of Gold" prove the man can lighten up long enough to go deep. "She's Too Good For Me" would have been a good Police single if it weren't for the pseudo-classical midsection that takes its joke far too seriously. Still, you wish he would loosen up and enjoy the rock once in a while. --Robert Wilonsky

5.0 out of 5 stars A cohesive composition Jun 17 2004
By G. Lara
Format:Audio CD
So many of the preceding reviews have echoed my sentiments about this album, and there's not much new that I can add. But, one element of this superb CD that deserves further praise is its overall composition.

Rarely is an album, when taken as a whole, as complete and integral as this one. Some others that come to mind: The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's; the 70's era Pink Floyd albums. There are a few others that I'm not able to recall at the moment. The point is, for all the individuality each song on this album carries, when I think of this CD, the thought isn't "I want to hear this song, or that one," it is "I want to hear that CD." To me, that is the criteron that makes this CD an absolute classic of its genre.

Sting is the rare artist who can define so purely his genre, pop, that he transcends it completely, extending the definition to places one never thought it could go.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sting's fourth solo album Jun 9 2004
Format:Audio CD
The ex-Policeman's fourth solo album should been entitled 11 Summoner's Tales since there are eleven tracks. The 11th and final track is entitled EPILOGUE(DON'T KNOW NOTHING ABOUT ME). This album was released a decade after the Police's last all-original album SYNCHRONICITY which was a megahit. Hits include IF I EVER LOSE MY FAITH IN YOU,FIELDS OF GOLD,SHAPE OF MY HEART,IT'S PROBABLY ME and EPILOGUE. Sting's first two albums,THE DREAM OF THE BLUE TURTLES and NOTHING LIKE THE SUN were megahits. 1991's THE SOUL CAGES wasn't so great. Sting's 3rd megahit was this album. All the other songs are good.

This CD has stood the test of time in my collection and is still fresh and relevant music in general. Ten Summoner's Tales is an interesting play on Sting's last name, Sumner, but also invites a glance into your dusty copy of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales...The Summoner's Tale within proving that Sting has a very bizarre sense of humor (as if we couldn't tell that already.) I'll just let you look that up for yourself...it's not a story to relate in mixed company--at least not in modern english.

Many Sting fans proclaim this his best CD as each song sounds like a top ten hit yet none of them sound alike. He did have many popular hits off of this album but those that weren't played on the radio are equally as enjoyable.

I love Ten Summoner's Tales, yet it seems to be one of Sting's less experimental works. The bass fills my need to feel the music in my soul while the lyrics engage my mind and imagination.

--Probably the best CD I own.

1.0 out of 5 stars stain on career
This cd reminds me of eating a hotdog and having ketcup drip on your shirt. Meaning, you enjoy it, but it leaves you annoyed after awhile.
