Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

The path of a serial killer intertwines with that of a teenage runaway who cannot resist his charm. "Readers will stay on the edge of their seats," said PW. Ages 14-up.

From School Library Journal

Grade 6 Up. Cormier is in top form in this chilling portrait of a serial murderer. Eric Poole has progressed from killing kittens, cats, and a canary to parents and unsuspecting young women. Now 18, he has paid for his mother and stepfather's murders with three years of juvenile detention and is ready to continue his "plan." Unfortunately, his looks and shallow charm are as pleasing on the outside as his character is ugly on the inside. The story unfolds through the eyes of two characters: Eric, and the luckless 15-year-old Lori, a runaway who met Eric once when she was 12 and is drawn to him like a moth to the flame. Even when she realizes his guilt, after he attempts to kill her, she can not desert him. The ugliness of the story contrasts with the beauty of the language. Perfectly titled with characteristic irony, a sense of "tenderness" pervades this gripping tale. Where other, lesser writers would have screamed the story in full-blown tabloid prose, Cormier is the model of decorum. No overt blood and gore are needed for this author to terrify his readers. Eric is not an antihero. Sympathy is not so much for the undeserving villain, but for the society that spawned and neutered him. A meaty horror study that's a fine substitute for the anemic, but popular "Fear Street" books.?Marilyn Payne Phillips, University City Public Library, MO

2.0 out of 5 stars An Unrealistic Novel-not recommended, Mar 10 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Tenderness (Mass Market Paperback)
Though I have read many of Cormier's books I have to say that this was my least favorite. I do give him credit for perhaps trying to envision a novel with a creative and inovative plot, but he ruins it with his characters. Lori and Eric are the two most unlikely pair to ever team up. Lori Crance contrdicts herself and is too pittiful for her ownn good. I have researched Cormier extencivley and I am aware of his belief in not trying to sugar coat his story lines. He tells it like it is. I do respect that, but as a result this novel is choppy and jumps around not really having any focus. As for Eric; Eric Poole is an unrealistic character who is completely unlovable. It seems impossible that any person could feel like Lori does about this tremendously one-dimensional indiviual. I do recommend Cormier to young adults, books like we all fall down, and fade, but this one was my least favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it!, Mar 5 2004
By Amanda Mitchell (Odenton, Maryland United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Tenderness (Mass Market Paperback)
This book was very intresting. Robert Cormier did a fantastic job writing from both a male and female point of view. I didn't really like the way this book ended, but the rest of the story was awesome.

2.0 out of 5 stars Hum...., Dec 3 2003
This review is from: Tenderness (Mass Market Paperback)
Dear Reader,

Okay I must admit when I read the back cover I thought it would be something more along the lines of a person wrongly convicted of a crime and this girl would help him prove it. But it turned to be something way different. Both star characters are really messed up and the story has a really bad end. I might be weird liking the old fashioned 'happily ever after' end but that's the way I am. I wont tell you what happens if you are planning on reading it but check it out at a library first.

No disrespect to the author, I mean I hope some day I will be able to publish a book but though you will probably never read this I do abmire the fact that you published a book I just dont like it as much as many others I have read.
