Review

"[A] wildly imaginative genre stretcher. {Reynolds] tells his tale with such verve that you just keep turning the pages." -- Nevill Hawcock FINANCIAL TIMES "A rousing adventure in a widly original setting." -- Eric Brown THE GUARDIAN "This is sci-fi as an intellectual balancing act. We're offered airborne battles and plenty of action too. It's almost the most convincing steampunk novel you'll ever read." -- Jonathan Wright SFX "There are flashes of the energy that drives the big sequences in the Revelation Space trilogy." -- Maureen Kincaid Speller INTERZONE --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

Book Description

Spearpoint, the last human city, is an atmosphere-piercing spire of vast size. Clinging to its skin are the zones, a series of semi-autonomous city-states, each of which enjoys a different - and rigidly enforced - level of technology. Horsetown is pre-industrial; in Neon Heights they have television and electric trains ...Following an infiltration mission that went tragically wrong, Quillon has been living incognito, working as a pathologist in the district morgue. But when a near-dead angel drops onto his dissecting table, Quillon's world is wrenched apart one more time, for the angel is a winged posthuman from Spearpoint's Celestial Levels - and with the dying body comes bad news. If Quillon is to save his life, he must leave his home and journey into the cold and hostile lands beyond Spearpoint's base, starting an exile that will take him further than he could ever imagine. But there is far more at stake than just Quillon's own survival, for the limiting technologies of the zones are determined not by governments or police, but by the very nature of reality - and reality itself is showing worrying signs of instability ...

1.0 out of 5 stars Judged a book by the cover, Feb 28 2012
This review is from: Terminal World (Hardcover)
But the cover was so cool! Let's start with the few things I enjoyed. Brilliant concept. The science that was developed in the second half was great. And... that's pretty much it.
The characters and the social dynamics were completely unbelievable. I challenge someone to read this book and care if any character lives or dies. The action is slow, which doesn't have to be a bad thing, but was. These are all very objective criticisms obviously, and I would never discourage someone from picking up a book based on my personal taste. Here is the thing that almost made me put it down, half read. The rhetorical questions!!! It seemed like every second sentence in the dialogue was a rhetorical question. If I never read another line that starts with "And I suppose.." or "I take it you.." it will be too soon. Don't read this book, just admire the cover in the story.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved it, Aug 29 2010
This review is from: Terminal World (Perfect Paperback)
I bought this book at a store in my city, but noticing the reviews posted on here for the book I felt compelled to make a comment.

It is a great book. It is a little chaotic as it establishes the setting, but the scale is quite large and I feel the chaos is justified. Once you grasp the storyline and the universe in which it is it is set, this is a great book. It has quite a few twists, and an incredible amount of history (fictional history) packed into it. The technology fascinated me straight though, and the characters were compelling.

1.0 out of 5 stars Dreck part 2, Jun 13 2010

PB reader (Vancouver Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Terminal World (Perfect Paperback)
Interesting premise...completely undeveloped
...long-winded "travel cum chase" with pretty much zero compulsion to read on
All his books up to this one have been page turners until done...this is still sitting by my bed...75% done...no compelling reason to finish it :(
