Product Description

From Amazon.com

Kelly Clarkson, the toothsome winner of Fox TV's first American Idol competition shows that her prime-time win was no fluke. She blithely skips through octaves and genres like a seasoned pro, belting out power ballads like hooky "Low" and the Diane Warren-penned "Some Kind of Miracle," with the aplomb of Pat Benatar in her prime. Clarkson tackles the neo-gospel "Anytime" without flinching, then shows some dirty street cred as she growls through "Miss Independent," a song she penned with Christina Aguilera. But Miss Independent would be a gross misnomer; despite the fact Clarkson co-wrote four of the album's tunes. Clarkson not only had uber record exec/executive producer Clive Davis at her disposal, but an arsenal of producers and songwriters to make sure she didn't make a creative misstep. Despite Clarkson's sublime vocal talents, excessive gloss at times overwhelms the quirky charm and personality she displayed on Idol. --Jaan Uhelszki

Album Description

In the midst of all that, Kelly found the time to record a blockbuster album. Featuring songs from some of the biggest names in music, she's put together an album that shows her true range as an artist. From massive ballads (a la 'A Moment Like This') to more upbeat pop/rockers, it's an album full of the same powerful vocal performances that won her the American Idol title.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great c.d from a great singer!, Aug 23 2003
By
This review is from: Thankful (Audio CD)
While I didn't get to watch the first season of American Idol because I live in Canada, I did catch the finale, in which Kelly Clarkson was crowned the first American Idol. Based on the performances of that evening, I fell in love with Kelly's voice, so it was a no-brainer to pick up her debut c.d. Here, I will lay out a track by track review of the album.

1) The Trouble With Love Is: I think this was a good way to start off the album, it's a nice slow ballad that was great to show off Kelly's fantastic voice, she really shines here, she has this power, yet subtleness to her voice htat truely amazes me.
2) Miss Independant: This is a great up-tempo song. I think it was a good song to release for her first single off the album, it's a definate change from "A Moment Like This". You can tell she really means the words, which is always good, because otherwise the song is meaningless. I really like the spunk, and the attitude.
3) Low: Now, this i sone of my faves off the album.I like the slow-rock category for Kelly, if she does pick a genre to tilt her next album towards, it would have to be songs kinda like this, and songs like "You Thought Wrong", her powerhouse duet with fellow Idol finalist. I'll talk about that more later. A great overall song, fantastic!
4) Some Kind of Miracle: Hmmm... Not much comes to mind while thinking of this song other than it's slow, and kind of boring, of course Kelly still sounds fantastic on this song, I just think it drags on a bit.
5) What's Up Lonely: This is a nice up-tempo R&B-ish song, nothing too spectacular coming from this track, but it's "alright".
6) Just Missed The Train: Oooooh! One of my other favourites from this c.d. It's a really neat song, and Kelly uses her voice in such different ways from some other songs, it has a real nice vibe to it, it sounds sort of like something Avril Lavigne would record, but Kelly of course has a good voice, WITHOUT the studio enhancement, so it is much better than anything Avril could do. Top notch song!
7) Beautiful Disaster: This song is kind of forgetful, I never automatically think to skip forwards to this song, yet when I do, I fall in lov ewith the song, it's very good, love it!
8) You Thought Wrong: Yes, it's finally here, Kelly Clarkson and Tamyra Gray, two HUGE voices in one GREAT song! I can't believe how cool this song sounds, i thought they would do a ballad or something, which I would have been happy with, but no, they surprised me (pleasently, I must add). With a terrific, up-tempo song. Great!
9) Thankful: This is a nic, bubbly song. While Kelly covers no new ground here, it is a fun listen. Everytime I listen to this, I feel happy, it's just a really nice song to hear, with a great message.
10) Anytime: The song she first sang on American Idol 2. It blew me aways then, and it does the same now, it's a trerific song, sung fantastically by Kelly. What range and power! I love this song!
11) A Moment Like This: This was her first single, and the song that made me a fan, from the finale of American Idol. I loved it (on her voice) then, and I still love it, it shows off her voice very nicely. Job well done, although i can't see how this is a "new mix".
12) Before Your Love: However much I like "A Moment Like This", I can't hel pbut LOVE this song more, it really shows off her power, and has good lyrics, good-good!

If you can't tell, I'm a fan, and this album, impressed, greatly. This is a must-have for Idol fans, and just fans of great singers, and believe me when I say she is one! great album!

4.0 out of 5 stars Thoughts on Thankful..., May 21 2003

I believe this CD is very good in many ways, and bad in others. One thing I did like about the CD is that it showed Kelly's whole vocal range. However, I did not like how some of the songs sounded alike. This CD is very much a blues CD, with the exception of Miss Independent and You Thought Wrong featuring Tamyra Gray. There are also some alternative songs, such as Beautiful Disaster. And of course, with every young girl singer, there are going to be some pop songs. However, these songs are slow, and I love them!

Almost every song on this album is incredible. Kelly Clarkson shows off her versatility and vocal range. Not many artist can pull off the variety of sound that's on this CD. You can find anything from Rock, Up-Tempo, Blue's, R&B, & Love Ballads. I highly recommend it!
