And so the hunt for the 39 clues continues, culminating in another revelation at the end of this book with enough unanswered questions to leave the reader anxious to read the next book. For the first time, 11 year-old Dan Cahill gets separated from his 14 year-old sister Amy Cahill and their au pair Nellie Gomez in China, a country with a population of over one billion people. Dan inadvertently joins Jonah Wizard and we learn more about this character, the Janus branch, and his role in the search for the 39 clues.

I love the relationship between Dan and his sister. We get to see how it is tested once again at this point in the story and how much they care for one another. Two scenes in this book reveal their characters when faced with choices to beat their opponents.

The historical figures that lead us to the next clue are Puyi, China's last emperor, and George Mallory. I really enjoyed the setting of this book, and although the last nail-biting scene was a little far-fetched, it's what marks The 39 Clues as an adventurous roller-coaster ride filled with interesting historical and scientific tidbits. Unlike the other books, this one also contains a message within the book that is conveyed by putting together the 17 words circled throughout the book. They form three sentences.

Two more books left in this series and I am eager to find out how it will all come to a finish. For fans of The 39 Clues this book will not disappoint. It builds up expectation for what will come next ' and for the climactic ending, no doubt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible series great book Jun 14 2010

Gordon Korman does an amazing job on this 8th book in this unique, creative series. The Cahills, Amy and Dan, start in China and the book ends with them heading off to the Caribbean in search of pirates. The main historical figures featured in this volume are the last emperor of China, Puyi, and a British climber named George Mallory. But they also travel back and forth across China and encounter different aspects of Chinese history. Dan and Amy finally think they find out what clan of the Cahill family they belong to. They have a fight and get separated in Tiananmen Square. Some of the family seems to be helping them and some they still mistrust.

This is the first series I have read that was written in such a way - 7 authors in 10 books in under 2 years. The individual books are good but collectively they are great. If you combine the books with the online games and clue hunt, you have an amazing experience for children of all ages. I started reading these books because the concept was so unique and interesting. I keep reading them because they are so well written. The gift and skill of the authors contributing to this series amazes me, each picking up from the previous book and continuing the series while keeping true to the characters and the overall story arc. This series is truly wonderful.

Amy and Dan head for China without a firm plan; however, their in-flight movie provides them with a clue, leading them to the Forbidden City. While in the city, they hear about the last emperor, who perks their interest. Dan decides to search for the movie clue while Amy creates a distraction.

After they're asked to leave the city, the siblings launch into a huge argument. Amy can't help but wonder what their family lines really mean and if their parents were the people from her memories. Dan can't believe his sister is questioning their parents' goodness. He takes off fuming, hoping to cool down.

Instead, he's kidnapped. He meets up with Jonas Wizard, who takes him under his wing, assuring him that he will help Dan find his sister. He also shows his young cousin the finer ways of life and they team up to search for clues. Is Jonas actually interested in Dan, or this another family member using him to find the clues?

Meanwhile, Amy and Nellie search everywhere for Dan but to no avail. They decide to keep searching for the clues in an effort to eventually meet up with him again. Will the siblings be separated while discovering the next clues, or will something happen to bring them back together?

With only two more books in the series to go, I can't wait for the conclusion of this thrilling action-orientated series. I love the danger, the clues, the puzzles, and the history behind each of the books.
