Andrei Brezianu is a specialist in European intellectual history and has taught at the Free University of Moldova, the Catholic University of America, and the University of Bucharest. Vlad Spânu is the president of the Moldova Foundation in Washington, DC. He served as a senior Moldovan diplomat both in Chisinau and abroad between 1992 and 2001.

"The A to Z of Moldova" is a well written, highly useful reference for anyone interested in the Republic of Moldova. Its approachable format provides a quick orientation in the "Chronology" and "Introduction" and then permits the reader to delve into detail through the alphabetical entries. Reading the book from cover to cover involves a certain amount of repetition since some entries contain material covered in others. However, this repetition is useful for a reader who wishes to learn the basics of a particular subject by turning to the corresponding entry. Cross references are provided for someone seeking more detail. Special mention should be made of the extensive bibliography, which is helpfully organized by subject and expertly annotated. I was impressed by the wealth of material on Moldova that the authors found.Turning to the substance of the book, I applaud its lack of tendentiousness. Moldovan history and current affairs are fraught with controversy, but the authors have made balanced presentations of some very contentious subjects. I would have no hesitation, therefore, in recommending "The A to Z of Moldova" as a fair, judicious source of key information on the Republic of Moldova.
