How and why almost anyone can learn to survive and (perhaps) thrive in a create-on-demand world,
By
This review is from: The Accidental Creative: How to Be Brilliant at a Moment's Notice (Hardcover)
Contrary to what this book's subtitle suggests, even people who are highly renowned for being "brilliant" cannot turn it on "at a moment's notice." The great value of this book is to be found in Todd Henry's explanation of how "purposeful preparation and training using the tools in this book will directly increase [his reader's] capacity to do brilliant work," and do so more often, if not (as he claims) "day after day, year after year." I agree with him that, with appropriate guidance and what Anders Ericsson characterizes as "deliberate" practice, almost anyone can be more creative (make something new or create a new combination) or more innovative (make something better, or improve with a new combination). Those are worthy objectives, to be sure, but gaining the skills needed is best viewed as a process rather than as a destination. This is what Henry has in mind when observing, "If you want to deliver the right idea at the right moment, you must begin the process far upstream from when you need the idea." Also, he urges his reader to adopt the goal of being prolific, brilliant, and healthy in order to produce "great work consistently and in a sustainable way." All three are essential. Tony Schwartz would add that energy renewal is essential to being healthy, as are proper nutrition and systematic physical exercise. Burnout remains a serious problem, especially during an economy such as the current one. Recent research indicates that, on average in a U.S. workplace, fewer than 30% of employees are actively and productively engaged. More than 70% are either passively engaged ("mailing it in") or actively disengaged, doing whatever they can to undermine operations. Throughout two Parts (i.e. "The Dynamics" and "Creative Rhythm") Henry examines business issues such as these, discussing each in a pragmatic rather than theoretical context: o The dynamics of creative work and of team work o Their side effects (explaining how to deal with the "assassins of creativity") o Focusing on what is most important o Building and sustaining important relations between and among individuals as well as organizations o Collaborative brilliance o Energy allocation, conservation, and renewal o Creative stimulation (if not inspiration) o Time allocation and efficiency o "Checkpoints" for cohesion of creative initiatives o Coordinating the "natural rhythms" of intentionality, choice, and discipline The earlier reference to Anders Ericsson supports Henry's acknowledgement that although creativity may seem accidental, spontaneous, situational, etc, it is almost always the result of an on-going process during which skills are strengthened through disciplined practice under expert supervision. Creative capability is vulnerable at all times to "assassins" that include dissonance, fear, and expectation escalation. Meanwhile, there are tensions to be managed, such as time/value, predictable/rhythmic, and product/process. I agree with Henry that how we define greatness defines who we are. I also think that how we define greatness clarifies who and what we can become. This is what Henry Ford had in mind long ago when observing, "Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're probably right." What do you think? Todd Henry suggests, "In the end, it's probably the single biggest determinant of the course of our life."

A Must-Have for Creative Professionals and Artists,

This review is from: The Accidental Creative: How to Be Brilliant at a Moment's Notice (Hardcover)
This book is ideal for a wide range of people. Seriously. That being said, creative professionals and artists alike will benefit that much more. Being creative on-demand is no simple task, Todd Henry makes creative work easier and that's a huge relief. It's a very well-written book. His insights and action steps are like a guiding force, or should I say a "secret weapon", for those of us who have to be inspired and productive. It's an extremely thorough book and in my mind is like a business how-to book, meets textbook, meets self-help book, and it has bible-like qualities when it comes to how we work and live within the creative process. This book is a must-have.

This review is from: The Accidental Creative: How to Be Brilliant at a Moment's Notice (Hardcover)
As soon as I finished reading this, I bought four more copies for my writer friends. This book will serve creative professionals and dedicated hobbyists of all stripes, from writers, painters, and graphic designers to design engineers and computer programmers. This book will help you bring a thoughtful structure to your every day creative work. It's work in the best way; Todd teaches you how to examine your life as a whole to make sure that you have the key elements necessary to support your creating over the long term. So often I find myself exhausted from a long day at work, with little energy left to give to my own personal art. After reading the book I've made some small, intentional changes to my daily habits and I've been excited to find I have so much more left in the tank for my writing and creating sessions. I even find myself waking up early, filled with new ideas. That's in the short term; I'm excited for the long term change to my production. This book stands on its own (no knowledge of the podcast necessary), but fans of the podcast will especially love this book! It's definitely money well spent and I even find that it is helping me to synthesize the ideas from other creative revolution books like Daniel Pink's "A Whole New Mind." The book has earned a spot on my desk, not on my bookshelf. 21 of 22 people found the following review helpful

If only I had been armed with this information in college but Oh how grateful I am to have it now!A few years ago, I stumbled upon Todd Henry and his podcast. Instantly I was drawn in by his accessible manner, as he painted the picture of what creative burn-out looked like..and it was my self portrait. His emphasis on "filling your tank" with artistic input before you even begin expelling your creative output, changed my entire perspective of the process. This book, How To Be Brilliant At A Moment's Notice is not only the compilation of the Accidental Creative's brilliant, prolific and healthy golden nuggets but reveals to you what's at the core of your blocked and frustrating creative moments. And then helps you create workable resolutions. I am thrilled to say that it exceeded all expectations that I had. It is the essential user's manual for any creative! If your creative outlook was impacted by Steven Pressfield's "The War of Art" then this book will blow you away. 17 of 18 people found the following review helpful

This review is from: The Accidental Creative: How to Be Brilliant at a Moment's Notice (Hardcover)
After being a listener of the Accidental Creative podcast for years, it was great to see Todd finally release a book. This is an important book worth sharing for a few reasons... 1. it's hits all the strong points from Accidental Creative podcasts - and there are many, 2. it covers a ton of uncharted territory extremely relevant to the modern knowledge worker, 3. it articulates art and creativity in way that almost anyone can digest, bringing it closer to home for engineering minds (like mine) and knowledge workers, and 4. brings all this together with a focus on mental and physical health too - it's like a Four Hour Body for the mind. A thoroughly recommended, refreshing read. |
