The Adolescent (originally published in English as A Raw Youth) is markedly different in tone from Dostoevsky’s other masterpieces. It is told from the point of view of the nineteen-year-old narrator, whose immaturity, freshness, and naïveté are unforgettably reflected in his narrative voice.
The illegitimate son of a landowner, Arkady Dolgoruky was raised by foster parents and tutors, and has scarcely ever seen his father, Versilov, and his mother, Versilov’s peasant common-law wife. Arkady goes to Petersburg to meet this “accidental family” and to confront the father who dominates his imagination and whom he both disdains and longs to impress. Having sewn into his coat a document that he believes gives him power over others, Arkady proceeds with an irrepressible youthful volatility that withstands blunders and humiliations at every turn. Dostoevsky masterfully depicts adolescence as a state of uncertainty, ignorance, and incompleteness, but also of richness and exuberance, in which everything is still possible. His tale of a youth finding his way in the disorder of Russian society in the 1870s is a high and serious comedy that borders on both farce and tragedy.

Not up to Dostoyevsky's usual standard,

The Adolescent lacks the timeless importance of Brothers Karamazov, Crime and Punishment, and Demons/The Possessed. All we have is a teenager who doesn't know how or when to shut up and a few promising fragments of plot that don't amount to much. It's difficult to remember much of what takes place. Our hero Arkady is an illegitimate son and alternately idolizes and despises his father. The elements that make Dostoyevsky great are here but are not mobilized effectively. If you don't absolutely love Dostoyevsky steer clear.

Great oft passed over Novel,

This was Dostoevsky's second last novel, written between the better know Demons (or Devils as it is sometimes translated) and the legendary masterpiece Brothers Karamazov.This novel has none of the grand scale of BK, nor the masterful dark humour and philosophical depth. Nor does it have the prophetic satirical portrayl of politics that the Demons captures. Yet, it is enchanting in its own quiet way, and its gets inside your head like any great Dostoevsky novel will causing you to experience the mental states of the main character. Strange, simple and hypnotic; this work is not a masterpiece, it is not a must read, and it does require quite a sizable page/time investment before it becomes truly enjoyable, but after the initial effort, the experience of reading the last half of the book is one not to be missed.

a neglected gem,

Without doubt one of his great novels. It is the second time i've read it in quiet awhile and am struck by how modern it really is. The narrative structure of using Arkady as the story teller helps explain the rushed, uneven and feverish pace at with the book unfolds: but it is an example of the blending of form and content. All Dostoevsky's great themes are here but on a smaller scale. The novel is a clear example of a great writer warming up to the themes and ideas that he was to explore fully in his next work and masterpiece, 'The Bros K.' 'The Adolescent' is an excellent introduction to the thematics and style of the world's greatest novelist
