Adventures Of Sinbad, The - The Complete First Season,

Adventures Of Sinbad, The - The Complete First SeasonI really enjoyed this Fantasy TV series and would give it a four star rating, BUT these new 4-6 `clipped-stacked' Alliance Films releases are really getting me `bugged' off. I've purchased over the last year Seasons of BeastMaster, Lexx, Earth: Final Conflict, RoboCop, Outer Limits: The New Series, PSI: Factor, Mutant X and now The Adventures of Sinbad and all but a few have had at least two to all six discs loose in the case with scratches after opening them. I went through 5 sets of this title at HMV and didn't find one that didn't have at least 3 discs loose. I just picked the best discs from these 5 to make 1 set and a few still have marks on them. The packing gets a one star rating so I can only give this Alliance Films release at best a three star overall rating. PLEASE NOTE: Why spend ~$22.09 for this title on amazon.ca when HMV is selling all these Alliance Films new releases in their stores for only $14.99. I'm canceling all my future pre-orders for Alliance Films releases on amazon.ca immediately as I've lost about ~$100 so far.

Having never seen this show, I ordered this not knowing what to expect. I was happy with the show itself, but unfortunately found that almost a third of the episodes would not play due to the very poor packaging - this had caused some of the discs to warp slightly and make them unplayable. Unfortunately I watched these well after the 30 day returns policy of Amazon Canada and therefore seem to be stuck with this set which I can only watch some of. A pity to say the least.

It is known that TV format and Sword and sandals/adventures do not mix well. We may have a rare case here. I did not follow the serie on TV (I caught a few episodes), but I could not resist buying the boxset. Produced in Canada and filmed in South Africa, here is what to expect :The bad news first : Due to the TV budget, the effects are sometime laughable. The giant spider scene was painful to watch and the delta-plane, episode 2 climax, was decent at best. But I guess that it pretty much summarizes the flaws of the show. There are few cliché (very few) to close your eyes on, but that is it. Example : I could have done without the Pride of the Samourai episode. The story-telling is captivating. The scenarios are all showing glimpses of originality. Very entertaining..... The plots are rather twisted for a one hour show. I give the show high marks for the writing. You do have to adapt to the new Sinbad looks. He does not have the rugged Douglas Fairbanks look and seems a bit young. I guess it is a trend. Kevin Sorbo is no Steve Reeves, but he did a good enough job to last many seasons as Hercules. The same concept applies here. After 2 episodes, your mind accepts that he is Sinbad. The rest of the crew is charming and colorful. Meave (Jacqueline Collen) statuesque physique is different from the usual skinny starlet body we are used to see. Quite refreshing.... The main cast is filled with seasoned veteran. People selected for the support characters, as well as all the small and very minor roles were carefully studied (I pressure) to give a lot of coherence to the show. For a reason or another, I did get tired of watching the evil enchanteress (too much skin, hair, lips...), but the actress fits the role perfectly (even if it took her far from her usual Daytime Soaps roles) . Everything about the show is eye-candy for the adventure film fan. Fight scenes are numerous, but not overwhelming. They let the scenario breathe.and are not choking it. Humor is almost btitish, as it is tongue-in-cheek. The French dubbing is acceptable, but not fantastic. The packaging is the only thing that is to be forgotten. Not sure who design the multi-disk box, but it is useless.
