Product Description

From Publishers Weekly

Gallagher's overplotted first novel requires readers to master concepts about alien brain functions, life cycles and prejudices, yet her tale verges on cosmic cliche: an extraterrestrial spaceship sent out to find new worlds discovers a remnant of Earth. Biologist Riitha f'ath and two other crew members scour the surface of a mysterious planet (later identified as Venus), a possible site for their world's new settlement. At first they detect no evidence of intelligent life, but then commander Tahl d'jehn's crew finds an unmanned space vehicle which, if it is the work of sophisticated beings still in the area, could mean failure for Tahl's 80-year mission. The ship's crew succumbs to symptoms of stress: some find their totally logical brain functions developing disturbing intuitive tendencies; those remaining completely logical yield to lethargy, the first stage of a death-wish process. But when it seems like the mission could become pointless, Riitha uncovers records from the last days of Earth, as well as its extraordinary legacy--a chance for humans (with the help of friendly aliens) to live again.

3.0 out of 5 stars Unusual 1st contact story, Nov 6 1998
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Alien Dark (Paperback)
This is a story told from the perspective of some catlike aliens who approach a solar system with 9 planets where the 3rd planet is uninhabitable with a carbon dioxide atmosphere and the 2nd planet is livable. Most of the crew aboard the alien ship are like Vulcans from Star Trek. They are the Du-ahn and can only think logically. They sneer at the illogical, imaginative Venja-ahn who discover that the 2nd planet was artificially modified from an dead world to it's current living state thousands of years ago by the now-extinct beings from the once livable 3rd world. The aliens are very interesting, although the author does go on a bit much about the differences between the Venja-ahn and Du-ahn. The biggest negative is that the author has not been able to continue this tale with a sequal.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Alien Dark, Dec 4 2002

I just finished reading this book for the second time and I am, ONCE AGAIN, eagerly waiting/hoping for the sequal(s). The feline AHSIN BEY crew in this novel survived decades on an advance mission (from which they cannot return) of travel, exploration, preparation, and in waiting for a colony ship from their home world of HASU-DIN to arrive. During their wait they also survived an unforseen discovery of a seemingly dead alien civilization. I think it's only fair that the author let's us in on what happens next!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great SF concept, Mar 13 2000
By G. Luze - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Alien Dark (Paperback)
This is a terrific book. Very imaginative and thought provoking. I read it about 10 years ago and have been looking for the sequel ever since. I emailed the author about a year ago and seem to recall she said she'd like to write the sequel, but is not sure about getting a publisher for it. If she ever does write the sequel I'd grab it up in a heartbeat.
