Product Description

"A race like no other in history," Jerry Bruckheimer's Emmy magnet begins (and ends) in New York with 11 teams of 22 competitors. In the end, only one team will be left standing. Their prize? One million dollars. To win, they will have to travel the world using clues, a modicum of cash, and their minds. Patience, endurance, and a sense of direction certainly won't hurt (plane tickets, fortunately, are prepaid).

The 2001 season is divided into 13 episodes (including two-part finale "Race to the Finish"). Instead of Immunity, there are Fast Forwards. The first team to find one goes straight to the next Pit Stop (rest area), bypassing any Roadblocks (tasks) left in the leg, while a Detour is a choice between two tasks. Some of the more hair-raising stunts include bungee jumping in Zambia ("The Race Begins") and beetle-munching in Beijing ("Fight to the Last Minute"). Other exotic ports of call include Paris, Rome, Tunis, New Delhi, and Bangkok.

From the start, certain teams assert themselves--and not always in the most positive ways. They include bickering (and nauseated) couples Paul and Amie (recently engaged) and Lenny and Karyn (dating), separated parents Margarita and Frank, and 14-year life partners Bill and Joe, AKA Team Guido (a name inspired by their dog). Other contestants include friends, roommates, grandparents, working mothers, and law partners. The road ahead will be long. Some partnerships will be strengthened by the journey. Others will be weakened. As with Survivor, alliances will be formed, like mother/daughter duo Nancy and Emily with self-proclaimed "Ugly American" frat brothers Kevin and Drew. (The Guidos uncharitably dub the latter "the fatties," while Kevin and Drew dub them Bert and Ernie.) The Amazing Race is hosted by low-key New Zealander Phil Keoghan. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Race 1st series Feb 18 2009
Format:DVD
We purchased the Amazing Race series 1 to have something that we could watch as a family and hopefully teach our kids something about geography and travel. We were hugely successful. Our kids were begging to watch more of the episodes.

Too bad they haven't put seasons 2 through 6 on dvd yet.

I just want to thank Amazon.ca for their express delivery. I got it 2 days after my order. I've tried to buy it from many stores in my area but no one could get it. So, Amazon.ca you just found a new customer. I'll buy from you any Amazing Race you'll sell from now. The DVD's were great and for those who don't want to know the winner, well just don't look, close your eyes, put the DVD in and start watching. That's what I did. I just could have look in the Internet but I didn't so it was a great surprise for me. That season was amazing! I've watched it twice now.

5.0 out of 5 stars WOW!!!! (second review from my first) Oct 8 2005
Format:DVD
Well now I have seen the complete first season of the amazing race. When I had seen the list of finishers on amazon.ca my eyes glazed over and I spared myself from seeing the results. I loved the first season. It was so interesting to see how it first began and to see where they have improved on video editing. I am a teacher and last year I did an amazing race around the school with my geography class. I used iMovie for editing and learned a lot from the show on how to use subtitles and music to make a great viewing experience. I'm sure it must have been difficult on the first contestants since they had no idea what to expect. Every competitor since then has had the privledge of knowing never to give up even when you think your time is up. I was quite disgusted by one team who sunk to very low levels in order to try and thwart the other teams. There is playing smart and being conniving and there is also playing with a disgustingly low set of standards that cause viewers and other teams to lose respect. If you don't have the plane tickets deal with it, don't try to board a plane that you have no tickets for just to delay other teams. I haven't looked at any of the side trips yet, I saved that for my second viewing of the DVDs. I can't wait for season 2 and for season 3 to come out. Please don't give away the finishers list for Season 2 and 3 on Amazon.ca, let me be surprised.
