Book Description

May 15 2008
For Americans either contemplating a move or already living in Canada, this reference answers all the questions necessary to successfully plan the transition, including immigration planning, customs planning, cash management, income tax planning, retirement, wills and estates, risk management, and investments. According to the Association for Canadian Studies, more than 10,000 Americans moved to Canada in 2006, a new 30-year record. The similarity in language, currency, culture, services, and products of these two countries can lead Americans in Canada to mistakenly think its laws and customs are also the same. With proper planning before moving, it is possible to get a five-year tax holiday from Canadian taxes!

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid advice April 29 2011
Format:Paperback
This book is aimed at a limited audience, but being an American in Canada, I was immensely grateful to stumble upon it. It was written by immigration specialists who clearly have been doing this for years and cover an impressive range of topics, from getting in the door to estate planning. It clarifies the many rules and regulations and stumbling blocks that are often hidden until you trip over them (or worse, they trip over you). Highly recommended for any American thinking of relocating. It can save you many headaches and many dollars.

4.0 out of 5 stars if you're american moving to canada, this is the best book I've found on things to think about Nov 30 2008

I've read 3 books and had 3 advisors I've paid for, and this book has between its covers more advice than those 6 sources combined. moving is tricky - more so in a post Sept 11 world - and this book covers all the topics, small and large, that you'll need to consider. Strongly recommended!

2.0 out of 5 stars Book length advertisement for relocation services Jan 30 2011
By frequent buyer - Published on Amazon.com

This book raises many issues facing people moving from the US to Canada, but rather than give specific advice on how to deal with these issues, the book suggests, time and again, that you seek professional help, like the help their company provides. As I understand their web site, a "transition plan" costs $10,500 and they won't manage your financial assets unless you have at least $1,000,000 to invest with them. If you are in that league, save the cost of the book and contact the authors directly. If not, this book will help you become aware of some of the issues you will face in moving to Canada, but you will have to look elsewhere for most of the answers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Sort of helpful, but not that supportive, if that makes sense Feb 28 2010
By Patrick E. Foster - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The book is laden with good info on the challenges an American moving to Canada might face, especially regarding taxes and citizenship, but its credibilty suffers from lots of jingoistic opinion (Canadians could learn to be more patriotic from Americans, for example) and a lot of 'our firm specializes in these issues' quasi-marketing content. While trying to be realistic, the authors simply come off as trying to talk you out of it. I wasn't that pleased with the book.
