The opening line of one of the best show on TV... " Anybody here knows why these two should not be wed, speak now or forever hold your peace " (Andy) ... " Andy I went the folks of this town to realize that you pick me to be your deputy because you look over all the candidate for the job, and you came to the fair, just and honest conclusion that I was the best suited for the job... And I went to thank you cousin Andy " (Barney Fife)... The first three episodes of the Andy Griffith Show are probably the best introduction to Mayberry, if you don't like them you won't like the rest. The first episode " The New Housekeeper " introduces the regular for the next 4 seasons... " I don't know how you got to be sheriff in this state but when this is over I am gonna see that you are thrown out, there is no place for such incompetence " (2nd episode, The Manhunt)... By the 3rd episode, music is an integral part of this show... " Guitar Player " ... we see that Andy loves music and it promises to be the best music in a TV show... " gave him a chance to finish! " ... The first season show us why the next seven seasons will be excellent! ... from 1960 to 1968 it was never out of the top 10 show... The gentlest, most kindhearted sitcom ever... Mayberry, NC is never out of comic relief, moral and wisdom... yes this show deserve to be in the pantheon of the best TV show... like excellent vintage it has age better than most TV show of the era. I personally think that the two biggest mistake of this TV show are letting go Don Knotts and moving to color... but it didn't happen in the first 5 years thankfully! Finally if you embrace Mayberry and the most colourful cast you won't regret it. Enjoy!

By Daniel Jolley TOP 50 REVIEWER

The Andy Griffith Show is loved from coast to coast, but it's especially important to a fellow like me who has spent all of his life in the great state of North Carolina. Around these parts, The Andy Griffith Show is more than just a TV show. Just about everybody under the age of 50 has grown up with Andy, Barney, Aunt Bee, Opie, Floyd, Otis, and the whole Mayberry gang. And, no matter how many times I see a particular episode, I never get tired of watching it. I've seen the 32 shows from Season One more times than I can remember, but watching them again on these DVDs was even better than seeing them for the first time on television. As time goes by, this show actually grows in importance. Mayberry is more than a place; it's a paradise on earth, a way of life many of us yearn for. Heck, I live in a small town now, but it doesn't feel like a small town anymore. I'm all for progress, but no life is as satisfying as the simple life in a calm, lazy town where you not only know everybody, you actually like everybody. Folks is just folks in Mayberry, and I would move there in a heartbeat if I could. Maybe a criminal wanders into town once every blue moon, but old reliable Barney Fife is always there to nip criminal activity in the bud (and Andy is there to see that Barney succeeds despite himself). About the worst thing that ever happens in Mayberry is Aunt Bee deciding to make a run of pickles. This is truly the life, and The Andy Griffith Show The Complete First Season lands a spot smack dab on top of my stack of favorite DVDs.

The first season doesn't have some of the big-name episodes (e.g., the Fun Girls or Citizen's Arrest), but it's my favorite season of them all.

3.0 out of 5 stars Disappointed Blu-ray not in Colour June 20 2014
Format:Blu-ray
Blu-ray DVD Quality is good but very disappointed that the film was not "painted" in colour. I was under the impression that the original black and white film was transformed to colour. Don't really see the point in buying a Blu-ray DVD in black and white.

5.0 out of 5 stars When the world is in chaos drop in to Mayberry March 19 2013

Even though you might catch Andy on a nostalgia channel, you'll never realize how much they cut out till you get the full episode dvd; SO great to watch without commercials, and the extra added minutes esp the epilogue. Season 1 has many of our favorite episodes that we can always visit when the news of the world makes you shake your head and wonder what's wrong with us. The added bonus is full screen and a great picture and a story of family, friendships and life lessons that may make you laff, cry and always make the "real" world easier to deal with...at least for awhile.
