I am often leery of what I judge to be "self help" books, but bought this book on a recommendation of a lecturer on depression and anxiety. When I received it, I started flipping through it and was surprised and relieved to see that the writing was thoughtful, easy to understand, but very specific about the nature of anxiety, how it affects us physiologically, and when and if medication is helpful. The author (Dr. Archibald Hart is a licensed psychologist, certified biofeedback practitioner, and board certified diplomate fellow in psychopharmacology) discusses both physical habits that can help break the cycle of anxiety, as well as how to change your thinking patterns in order to lower the stress you take on.

I have found it to be extremely helpful and realistic. I believe anyone who struggles with anxiety would benefit from reading this book.

This book really helped me to understand so much about anxiety. Especially how stress contributes to anxiety and panic, and how I can halt anxiety and panic before it grips me. Dr. Hart does a great job in all regards. I really like how he believes anxiety medications may be necessary but they won't heal you of anxiety. You must heal yourself, if required then use medications as they will help. As you modify your stress/anxiety causing behavior you will need less and less medications. I am living proof. Dr. Hart's principles are sound even if he presents things with a bit of a Christian aspect. I am by no means religious yet understand his concepts. They work for me.

I bought this book based on the back cover which reads: "...Then he offers practical proven steps you can take to change your lifestyle, without relying on medication and psychotherapy." I found as I was reading the book, however, that Dr. Hart is a huge proponent of the use of medications. There are also many absolutes in the book. He claims that if you don't do certain things or let certain things go too long, you may never get rid of anxiety or worry. This book is definitely not for everyone.

I found this book to provide excellent advice. I have implemented many of Dr. Hart's suggestions. Although Dr. Hart does not condemn the use of medications, he makes it clear that medication is a short term step and that long term life style adjustments are needed to live an anxiety free life. Because of the help I obtained from reading this book, I have made it through the worst of my anxeity without the use of medication.
