Product Description

Quill & Quire

Twelve-year-old Cody and his best friend Eric are spending a typically drowsy summer in Sultana, Manitoba, when the unthinkable happens. With the local MacFie River almost dry because of an extended drought, the business owners of the tourist-dependent, job-challenged small town make some painful cuts to survive. The most painful? Eric’s mother is about to lose her job at the local diner, forcing the family to move elsewhere to find work. Barring a week of solid rain, the best friends are about to be separated forever. How can two tweens revive the local economy and save their friendship?

Cody and Eric soon hatch a plan. What the town needs, they decide, is an instant tourist attraction, and what quicker way to draw tourists than to orchestrate a major archaeological find? With the help of Eric’s twin sister Rachel, the trio creates a clay plaque inscribed with Egyptian hieroglyphics describing an ancient journey of exploration that ended on the banks of the MacFie. The real trouble starts when a doctor finds the plaque and the plan succeeds beyond the young hoaxers’  wildest expectations.

Andreas Oertel sets a brisk but not overly rushed pace early in the novel and never lets up, placing a series of increasingly complicated obstacles and mysteries in his protagonists’ path until the cinematic conclusion. That conclusion – and the obvious set-up for the next adventure in the series – may be a tad too tidy for more demanding readers, but Oertel has laid the foundation for a fun, engaging series for adventure and history buffs. Hopefully, though, future volumes will give readers a little more time to get to know its central cast of oddball jesters.

Book Description

(ages 9 - 12)  Could ancient Egyptians have made it as far north as Manitoba? That's what Cody and his friends want the experts to think, as they orchestrate an archaeological hoax that puts their town on the map. Life is getting more dismal by the minute in Sultana, Manitoba. Thanks to a dry season that nearly dried up the river, the campers aren't coming anymore. There aren't even enough tourists to keep the local restaurant busy, and if Cody's best friend's mom loses her job there, the family will have to move away. Cody needs to come up with a plan to put the spotlight on Sultana, or he could wind up being the only 12-year-old left! Cody, his best friend Eric, and Eric's twin sister, Rachel, concoct an elaborate hoax that transforms this tiny town into a hotbed of activity. An "ancient Egyptian" tablet is discovered, and suddenly archaeologists, reporters, and tourists are rushing over to take a look. Business couldn't be better! The kids are convinced that their plan has succeeded ... until one suspicious stranger starts trailing every move that Cody and his friends make, and they realize their hoax may have gone too far. Who knew that messing with ancient Egypt could be so dangerous – maybe even deadly? This archaeological adventure is full of tricks, twists, and danger.

This is a must read for tweens. Not only is it entertaining, but the author has managed to educate the reader as well. Teachers should consider including this book for the classroom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Courtesy of Teens Read Too, Aug 10 2010
This review is from: The Archaeolojesters, Book 1 (Paperback)
When Cody, Eric, and Rachel create a fake Ancient Egyptian tablet in order to bring tourism to Sultana, they bite off more than they can chew.

The elderly doctor, who the trio set up for finding the tablet, turns out to be a doctor of Archaeology and he calls in the experts to discover if the find is real. To make matters worse, a mysterious, suspicious man starts hanging around the dig site and trailing the trio's every move.

Has the three's hoax gotten out of control? Why is the man following them?

A fun adventure filled with short chapters, mystery, and suspense. The characters are well-developed, the plot is unique, and the background research is accurate. Readers who like both adventure and Ancient Egypt will enjoy reading THE ARCHAEOLOJESTERS.
