Are you ready for The Arrival?,
By
This review is from: The Arrival (1996) [Blu-ray] (Blu-ray)
When this movie came out back in '96 I snagged a widescreen VHS copy, which ironically has more special features than the blu-ray or DVD releases! It's weird and disappointing to me that the interviews from the VHS version are not available anymore, but whatever -- when I found this disc at a cut-rate price I decided to make the leap from the tape to blu-ray.The good: The 7.1 surround mix is really excellent. When Charlie Sheen first discovers an alien signal, it's rotating around the room in a really cool way. There aren't many discs out there in 7.1, but if you've got the equipment, here's a good sci-fi movie to try out. The hi-def transfer also looked quite good. The bad: Oh dear Lord, some of these mid-90's movies have the worst CG effects. The Arrival has some of the worst I've seen in a movie of this stature. Plot summary: Charlie Sheen is Zane Zaminski, an astronomer working for the JPL in the search for extra-terrestrial intelligence. Mirroring the plot of the concurrently released Contact, Zaminski finds a "wow" signal and takes it to his boss, Phil Gordian (Ron Silver). (I found the use of the last name Gordian to be interesting -- as he represents a knot that Zaminski cannot undo.) Conspiracy takes over -- Gordian secretly destroys the tape, has Zaminski fired, and attempts to destroy his credibility. Why? What follows is a series of mysteries, coverups and conspiracies that links Zane to Ilana Green (Lindsay Crouse of Iceman fame) in Mexico. Green has found flowers growing in a small patch of grass in the frigid arctic and links it to CO2 emissions. But how is this possible? And to what ends? Several exciting action sequences are to be found before Zane discovers what is really going on down in Mexico, who is responsible, and what Gordian's role is. It's not a monumental earth-shattering revelation, nor is it a total surprise, but I won't spoil it for you regardless. For the price I paid, this disc was totally worthwhile regardless of the fact that it has zero special features. It's a decent yarn, the sound is awesome, and it's always nice to upgrade from VHS to hi-def. 3 stars.

SCI-FI AS IT SHOULD BE...,
By Lawyeraau - Published on Amazon.com
This movie was underrated when it was first released, and, as with all good, underrated movies, it has since become a cult favorite. Clever and imaginative, a lot was done on a limited budget to make it into a top notch sci-fi thriller. It has an intelligent and well reasoned story, and the special effects are imaginative. Charlie Sheen, clean and sober, plays radio astronomer, Zane Zaminski, who picks up radio signals that are not earthly. When he takes a copy of the tape of these signals, which he believes to be indicative of intelligent, alien life, to his boss, chillingly played by Ron Silver, he is summarily fired from his job. Suddenly, all is not right with the world. Smelling something real fishy, Zane sets about investigating. A rendevous in Mexico with a fellow scientist (Lindsay Crouse), who is there on her own investigation, clues him in to the fact that she, too, has noticed something odd. Unbeknownst to both, her concerns are connected to his. Their collaborative, investigative efforts eventually prove fruitful. He ultimately discovers an immense alien plot, and it seems that a well orchestrated invasion is imminent. Yes, it's the old alien conspiracy story rearing its ugly head. Only this time, it is handled with surprising intelligence. Zane is now on a mission to convey what he knows to the world, but the aliens will stop at nothing to silence him. Will he make it? Watch the film and find out. If you love sci-fi films, you will not be disappointed. Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Crouse, and Ron Silver all do a great job, which goes a long way in making this a stellar sci-fi film. The creative special effects that make the aliens just different enough are novel. The film also boasts an excellent script. All in all, this is sci-fi as it should be. 1 of 1 people found the following review helpful

a actual good science fiction movie,
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
this is one that reminds me of the old sci fi movies. It is perfectly planed and reveals thisngs very slowly. Sheen is great the kid who befriended himwas good too. Great for fans of sci fi. Only problem is that I wish more was reaveled at the end but I guess that is what they wanted me to wish cause there was a sequel that wasn't as good.
