5.0 out of 5 stars Great Story, Sad Ending Dec 8 2005
By A Customer
Format:DVD
If you read some of the more factual accounts available, such as comments by, or interviews with, Dr. James Floyd (former Avro engineer) or one of the books by Palmiro Campagna, you will see that the movie is not overly accurate from a historical standpoint. Taken for what it is (a work of historical fiction loosely based on the facts), however, it is a very good story. It shows just what Canadians are capable of, as well as what happens when too much political interference is tolerated. That refers to both the political jockeying within the Liberal and PC governments within Canada at the time, as well as the influence exerted by the American government. Many sources state that the U.S. government was trying to protect their own floundering industry and spy efforts from a superior alternative, all while milking Avro for all the technical information they could get. Detailed study of situations like these should be required for all students of political science.

Overall, a great story, with interesting, factual features on the disc other than just the movie itself. If you watch it, you will likely end up with a thirst for more information on the subject. Fortunately, there are many recent accounts of the facts, with more information being de-classified from the national archives as time passes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very entertaining and informative Dec 23 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Good account of the Avro Arrow program. The movie sticks to the facts for the most part, except the female engineer did not exist. She is a composit character representing the problems faced by both men and women who worked for Avro. Very good documetary of one of the biggest debacles in Canadian history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good screenplay of the Arrow project April 13 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This fiction based on some historical facts of the last fighter aircraft to be produced in Canada. Dan Akroyd plays Crawford
Gordon, who was in charge of Avro at that time. There were 6 production prototypes of the Arrow in 1959 just before
the project was cancelled by the Diefenbaker PC government, who did not understand the importance of continuing the
Arrow, even in limited production, thinking because of the Soviet nuclear ballistic missile threat, the days of a supersonic
fighter were over. Black Friday came because the funding was pulled in favor of Bomarc missles from the Americans,
a political move that was costly to Canada in terms of employment and expertise lost to American defense contractors.
Diefenbaker realizes his mistake a few months later..but by then it was too late. The 6 prototypes were chopped to pieces.
In the movie Sarah Botsford plays an aircraft engineer whos contribution was significant to the project, but in reality she was
a single female character added in to represent the hundreds of women who were involved with the defense project.

Will cherish this movie for a long time. What a disaster when this project was scraped. This plane would still be flying today.

Gift. Recipient enjoyed it. Shipped quickly without problems. A sad commentary on the ineptitude of previous Canadian governments in their dealings with the US.
