Review

"Full of clever circuits and sharp insights, but with a surprising minimum of mathematics... The depth is genuine, as is the richness of examples, data and apt tricks."
Scientific American

"Far and away the finest book on the subject of electronics ... in the last decade. I cannot recommend this book highly enough to anyone whose research or experiments require some electronics."
Optical Engineering

"A delightful book...The circuits actually work, the schematics are all readable."
Review of Scientific Instruments

"This book is filled with a tremendous diversity of valuable information. More importantly, this book is a joy to read...It's not at all like studying--it's too much fun."
EDN (News Edition)

"This book provides a painless way to learn about electronic design. It is also a good read for those already experienced in electronics."
EDN (Magazine Edition)

"..it comes as close as any book we've seen to fulfilling the promise inherent in its title...written as though to educate the novice, but practicing engineers will encounter many useful tidbits they didn't know, hadn't thought about, or had long forgotten."
Analog Dialogue

"...a refreshingly simple, practical and comprehensive textbook on the subject of electronic circuit behavior and design...one of the few contemporary practical reference handbooks on electronic design basics."
Physics in Canada

"A lovely book, it covers a wealth of electronic topics in a very readable style."
Richard Morin, Sunexpert

"The second volume carries on une grande tradition as well as adding 400 new pages to the original (already massive) text. It is, without doubt, the book for the practical engineer. No cerebral theorizing here, no long sections of abstruse mathematical derivations; just page after page of solid empirical engineering. It is also light hearted and anecdotal, with some wonderful pages of bad ciruit 'howlers' that the authors have encountered."
John V. Hatfield, IJEEE

"...an excellent general electronic textbook."
Poptronics

"The best self-teaching book and reference book in electronics... The beauty and fun of electronics shows through."
Radio Communication

"Another electronics textbook that became an international best-seller... the book is renowned for presenting the techniques that circuit designers actually use."
IEEE Spectrum

Product Description

This is the thoroughly revised and updated second edition of the hugely successful The Art of Electronics. Widely accepted as the authoritative text and reference on electronic circuit design, both analog and digital, this book revolutionized the teaching of electronics by emphasizing the methods actually used by circuit designers -- a combination of some basic laws, rules of thumb, and a large bag of tricks. The result is a largely nonmathematical treatment that encourages circuit intuition, brainstorming, and simplified calculations of circuit values and performance. The new Art of Electronics retains the feeling of informality and easy access that helped make the first edition so successful and popular. It is an ideal first textbook on electronics for scientists and engineers and an indispensable reference for anyone, professional or amateur, who works with electronic circuits.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not an introduction to electronics, Dec 1 2007
By
Kenneth W. Butcher (Canada) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: The Art of Electronics (Hardcover)
Just as I said in the title of this review the book is not an introduction to electronics and as you can read from some of the posts people were disappointed for different reasons some because it was too advanced and others because it didn't prepare them the big exam and gave it 2 or 3 stars. This book is not for beginners and is not written in a way for "green horns" to understand electronics. There are electronics for dummy's books and that is a good place to start for most people. My first time through this book I lacked the understanding of basic principles of electronics and the physics behind them. This is where I think most people get frustrated. I had to back and review basic math like algebra, calculus, and trig. I had to read a few books on physics (electronics is heavily built around physics so if you don't know it, do not expect this book to teach it is not a physics text) to refresh my memory on the basics.

I don't think this book is bad it is written like a text book so if you like romance novels this is not the book for you. I think it is a little over priced for what is worth in reading material but I do use it as a desk reference and look through it often to find places I have highlighted for things I often forget. Get a basic understanding of electronics before getting this book. People who have given it a bad review I think are trying to run before they can crawl.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Impressive Book - Highly Recommend, Jan 7 2004
By
This review is from: The Art of Electronics (Hardcover)
This is an impressive and detailed book 1100 pages of electronics circuits, diagram, and tips. If you started at the beginning and worked your way through chapter by chapter it would be similar to taking a complete course on electronics. It has 15 chapters plus a large appendix.

For example the early chapters are basic introductions that quickly graduate to transistors and circuits progressing through to switches and linear circuits. By chapter 5 they proceed to filters then on to power supplies and regulators, and special amplifiers and shielding. Then they make a transition to digital circuits midway through the book, then again using that as a basis to make the next step to microcomputers by chapter 10. That continues to chapter 13 where the subject turns to RF and microwaves. The book ends with examples of measurement. So all in all it is a step by step review from simple voltage sources through computers to RF with many examples. It is all easy to read and quite clear. The book is not designed for a novice but probably better someone in the field and needs a refresher or one excellent reference source.

Having graduated EE more than a few years ago I need a quick reference in the office where I can refresh my memory or design something new, or see what if any new developments are available.

To make a long story short, as a user I do use the book but as a reference. When you first get the book do a quick read to get a general understanding and then go back to the book as required. The book is an excellent addition to any technical reference library. It is worth the cost, no brainer.

Four or five stars.

Industrial user.

2.0 out of 5 stars The Art of Electronics, Feb 6 2002
By
"ghtryder" (Pittsburgh, PA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Art of Electronics (Hardcover)
This text is good as a overview of circuits and designs for an experienced engineer, providing a wide variety of examples. However, it often lacks explanations and discussion on the theory behind the design examples, which makes it very difficult to understand for a novice. Without a decent background in circuit components and their functions, this text will leave you with many unanswered questions.
