From Amazon

Aimed at professionals and dedicated amateurs, The Art of Faux is packed with gorgeous examples of faux finishes. Internationally acclaimed, award-winning decorative painter and instructor Pierre Finkelstein covers every aspect of the art form in tremendous detail, beginning with extensive specifics on all tools, materials, supplies, and planning, and including preparation and cleanup considerations. Each of the other 10 chapters concentrates on a wide variety of faux finishes in different categories: marble, semiprecious stone, limestone and sandstone, wood, patinas and textures, metals and gilding, tile, organic materials (such as ivory, leather, and mother-of-pearl), stenciling, and trompe l'oeil. There are even instructions for uncommon faux finishes, such as bamboo, Delft tile, snakeskin, and damask, that are not generally taught in other books on the subject. Every finish is presented as a complete recipe, and the list of ingredients includes not only paints, glazes, and tools, but also difficulty ratings and lists of preparatory exercises for techniques that are part of the complete finish. People seriously involved in any aspect of faux finishing--particularly people considering careers in the field--should invest in the information-packed The Art of Faux.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good source book, but not complete, Sep 4 2001
This review is from: The Art of Faux: The Complete Sourcebook of Decorative Painted Finishes (Paperback)
The book has good learning steps and ample pictures, however, it is not a "complete" faux finishing book. I am a college student who is majoring in faux finishing and I will admit that it is a good book that teaches numerous projects other books tend to forget. It mainly contains marble, stone, and tile finishes. It does not contain simple things like color wash, dragging, sponging, ragging, and etc. So to the new faux finisher it contains some hard steps that without the basics first will be complicated. But to the experienced faux finisher the book is a great guide and I truly love it.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is fantastic!, April 1 1998
This review is from: The Art of Faux: The Complete Sourcebook of Decorative Painted Finishes (Paperback)
Having purchased and used most faux finishing books available this one is one of the best for marbles and woodgrains. Great pictures and clear instructions. A multitude of marbles and woodgrains to choose from. If you are looking for "recipes" and a book with a large selection of different marbles this is the one. A highlight worth mentioning and a trouble spot for painters new to marbling is veining and the line drawings in the back are a great reference tool. Included are the more unusual finshes from stones to patinas and organics, you won't find the usual sponging and ragging here. This book is a must for anyone interested in the art of faux finishing.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic How-To for all - beginners to expert, July 5 2004
By
Bonita Bob (Bonita Springs, FL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Art of Faux: The Complete Sourcebook of Decorative Painted Finishes (Paperback)
If you are interested in a serious, professional faux effect, this is the place to start (and finish).

Finkelstein lays a foundation (history of faux), provides the building blocks (tools, recipes, and techniques), and assembly instructions (detailed, well illustrated examples of each step).

If you take the time to practice the techniques and follow the instructions, you can do marvelous work regardless of your experience level. I had never done wood graining, and I achieved an effect virtually indistinguishable from real mahogany on my first project.

I originally borrowed a copy for a specific project (wood graining a doorway) and had to buy the book for future projects and reference.
