Product Description

Product Description

In this classic study of how people learned to retain vast stores of knowledge before the invention of the printed page, Frances A. Yates traces the art of memory from its treatment by Greek orators, through its Gothic transformations in the Middle Ages, to the occult forms it took in the Renaissance, and finally to its use in the seventeenth century. This book, the first to relate the art of memory to the history of culture as a whole, was revolutionary when it first appeared and continues to mesmerize readers with its lucid and revelatory insights.

About the Author

Dame Frances Yates (1899-1981) achieved a world-wide reputation as an historian. Her close association with the Warburg Institute of the University of London began shortly after the Second World War, after the publication of her first two books. She was Reader in the History of the Renaissance there until 1967, when she became an Honorary Fellow. As well as gaining many academic honours, she was awarded the OBE in 1977 and was made DBE, in the same year. Her publications include Giordano Bruno and the Hermetic Tradition, Theatre of the World, The Rosicrucian Enlightenment, Astraea, Shakespeare's Last Plays and The Valois Tapestries.

Frankly I don't understand why some on this board board can't give this book a five if they have read it carefully from beginning to end covering about 4,000 years of thoughts on memory. Perhaps a little background and appreciation of philosophy and its impact on the surrounding world is needed. The one commentator here who can't see the relevance of all the occultism that the book transgresses towards can't see the big picture here. We are being shown the originations of the explosion of arts and science in western civilization that occurred in the last 600 years, and, in a way, the reemergence of a pseudo sun-worshipping society, and, perhaps were Freemasonry and Rosicrucianism came from. The main thrust of this book helps explain the emergence of method or the scientific method, and the foundations of Copernicus, Bacon, Descartes and Leibniz.
How much more breathtaking can that be.
Fantastic work. I wish I had teachers like Yates.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing, July 17 2001

This is reasonably hard going, as all Yates books are, but it really a great read. Complex and deep. Something to open your eyes to a older (and forgotten) world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book, July 9 2001
Ce commentaire est de: The Art Of Memory (Paperback)
An incredible book and very historical in nature. I would refer to the previous reviews of this book in the light of their individual statements. The reviewers helped me in the purchasing of this book, also Yates, and her research on the art of memory does not disappoint me. In fact, this book has taken me in many different directions regarding memory: Loci, mnemonics, mnemotechnics, history, mysticism, magic, mathematics, Egyptology, alchemy. This book is very special because of the implications that a "art of memory" has on our history, and I believe in our future. This book is not the easiest of reading material (I am no history buff) but is a spectacular read.
